Q: El Capitan and missing volume control for speakers

I have just updated to OS 10.11 El Capitan. Upon successful completion of installation, my desktop speakers no longer have ANY volume control. I can not control the volume by the keyboard shortcuts on the keyboard nor by the volume control (which is now greyed out) in the menu bar. Note that I can select and use the USB speakers under the Sound portion of System Preferences, but I can not change the volume at all. Everything worked just fine BEFORE this update (which was a couple of hours ago). With the exception of the new OS, nothing else has changed on this computer.

Any thoughts on how I can correct this issue?

Mac Pro; 2 x 2.4 Quad Core; 14 GB RAM; OS 10.11 El Capitan

Speakers: Microsoft (yea, I know...) Digital Sound System 80

    Bouuuh.

    Same problem for me.

Macbook 13-inch, Late 2011, i7.  w/ Motu ultralit mk3. I got the "the selected device has no output controls" and no input control message.

The sound card is fine (i tried it on other mac). And the problem is worth than i though cause it s not working w/ ableton either.

Creative Xmod here. Still no control over volume. Like others have said, this functionality has continued to work with this device through many OS X updates. And now all of a sudden we lose it - and there seems to be no fix in sight. Apple, I hope you're hearing us.

I have no menu bar control for volume. I have external speakers plugged into the line out 3.5 jack and I have 'show volume in menu bar' checked. This seems like pretty basic stuff, I hope its a glitch and not apple over engineering stuff.

    Ok. Nothing news.

I ll got my soundcard getting worked with the computer by rebooting the computer sometimes. It s really unstable. Sometimes it work sometimes not.

But when it s working, Ableton (my DAW software) is completelly unstable.

SO APPLE THIS ***** BIG TIME.

We need some upgrade ASAP !!

I have the same issue with my Microsoft Sound System 80, however, I just found an ancient USRobotics USB Internet Speakerphone Model 9610 (for handsfree Skype calls) and it shows up in Preferences as C-Media USB Headphone Set

I wonder if the soon-to-be-released 10.11.2 update could finally address the problem. As usual, Apple won't tell about specifc issues but it does say something about USB connections, which gives me some hope.

Has anyone tried the update? I read the beta is free but you need a Developer account to get access to it.

    Hi!

You don't need a developer account anymore, just sign in to beta program in the link below.

    https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/

BTW I'm with the same sound problem, hackintosh running El Capitan 10.11.1 and a HiFiMan HM-101 USB.

I have a Pro-Ject USB Box that shows up as "Burr-Brown Japan PCM2702" in System Preferences. I also have speakers in my display connected to through DisplayPort and it's the same thing with both of them, no volume control since upgrade to El Capitan (worked just fine in Yosemite and earlier versions of OS X).

Just upgraded to 10.11.2 and still no volume control.

Would just like to add that I can echo the problems others are having. My USB audio set-up (Burr-Brown Japan PCM2702) - has stopped working since upgrading to El Capitan. It's still selectable in Sound settings, but when selected the volume is muted and volume control is disabled. Had previously worked without problem in every iteration of OS X until upgrading to 10.11. Googling around it appears quite a number of users are affected by this with no solution forthcoming. Sort it out please Apple!

Also having problems, no internal speakers listed in output devices, no control of sound from keyboard or menu bar. Nothing. Only available option in sound output choices is optical digital. Tried many things listed here with no success.
