Q: Since upgrading to OS 10.10.5, Mail breakdowns

I'm now having serious problems with Apple's Mail.app that I don't remember ever having before. I noticed these issues after running Apple's Software Update, which upgrading MacOS X from v. 10.10.4 to 10.10.5.

  1. When I launch Mail, it frequently refuses to display a received InBox message contents in the main Mail window, even if I have a specific message selected.
  2. If I open a received InBox message in a separate window, Mail will typically show me the contents of the message, but Mail will still not display the message's contents in the main Mail window.
  3. Occasionally, Mail will not display the message list queue for an mailboxes, whether they be InBox, Sent, or Draft.
  4. Other times, now rarely, Mail will launch and operate normally.
  5. Sometimes, I will be using Mail and it will spontaneously "beach ball" on me for doing something simple like operating the app's pull-down menus. Typically, such a beach ball can only be cured with a Force Quit.
  6. Since the 10.10.5 update, Mail typically does not quit. If I invoke the Quit command, it typically sits there. I must invoke a Force Quit on Mail, which is indicated to be "not responding".
  7. I'm having trouble getting Mail to send e-mail messages.

Does any of this make sense? What can I do to remedy this?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), late-2013 Core i5 2.9 GHz, 8GB RAM, 1 TB HD

    Try running the combo update.

    10.10.5 Combo Update

    Try rebuilding the mailbox.

    Rebuild mailbox

If that doesn't work, try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

I will be trying the Combo Update soon.

I already tried rebuilding one of my InBoxes. All the messages in it vanished immediately and do not seem to be coming back.

I downloaded the Combo Update at the link via web-browser.

Upon launching the Updater, I received a warning message that this computer was not eligible for the Update. (Which makes sense, since it was upgraded to MacOS 10.10.5 already.)

    Hello Walt_Atwood,

Thank you for posting this topic ... I have the same issue as you have accept from number 7.

All other 1 to 6 are frequently the issues I have to deal with.

Force quite is the only solution to get mail alive again.

After force quite and relaunching Mail App again everything is back to normal.

The most of the time this happens is after waking up my iMac from sleep.

Could it be an Wifi problem? after waking up my Mac?

I am still experiencing frequent slowdowns and crashes with Mail.

If I empty out my Junk Mail folder, this seems to improve Mail's behavior for the short-term.

Other than that, I'm still having problems.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

    Hi Eric Root.

Do you want me to run Etrecheck specifically when I'm doing something in Mail, or just generally?

You have 2 instances of adware (marked in red). Run the report again and click the Remove button next to them.

    Try uninstalling Spotify.

    Spotify Uninstall

If that doesn't fix the problem.

Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.

    Quit Mail.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.
