Q: When I preview a new calendar the photos disappear

I am creating a new calendar from Photos. When I save it as a PDF some photos have disappeared, the month is blank, other months are fine. Does anyone know what to do. I've tried restarting the computer and that hasn't worked

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Hi mark, i have the same issue with my photo books.

I had one photo book i created with Yosemite and the print to pdf option was displaying the images. Now with El Capitan my old and new photo books are being displayed with some blank pages.

    Here a screenshot

I'm glad it's not just me, I was wondering if I had somehow corrupted my photos.

I was only alerted to the problem when Apple rejected my attempt to buy the calendar. All their advice to fix it hasn't worked and it's near impossible to get some help

What advice was that so we don't duplicate efforts?

    Hi OT,

This is what I was advised to do:

Before submitting a new order, we have some suggestions for correcting the issue:

    1. Restart your computer. Make sure all applications are closed.

    2. Preview your project in a PDF format as that is the best means by which you can see how your project will appear in its physical format.

    - Select your Calendar project.

    - Hold over “Buy Calendar” while holding down “option” on your keyboard and clicking on your mouse.

    - A menu should pop up prompting you to save a PDF of your project.

    - Enter a name for the PDF in the “Save As” field.

    - Specify where you want the PDF saved in the drop down menu for the “Where” field.

    - Open the PDF from the location where you saved it.

    3. Make necessary changes to your project based on any issues you see in the PDF.

    4. Preview your project in a PDF format again to be sure that changes you made resolved the issue.

    5. Resubmit your order.

    i tried the same too.

Also, i tried to modify some pictures and frames but at the end the result is the same. In the book creation app the images are displayed, looks like something more about the PDF and printing options in PHOTOS.

As a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

    Hi OT,

That has worked, I've made two different calendars and they both appeared to be complete when I previewed them. What do you suggest next?

That tells us your primary library is damaged. Repair the library according to these instructions from this Apple document: Repair Your Library.

Note: If you use iCloud Photo Library with Photos, this action will cause Photos to re-upload all your pictures. (from Fix missing or incorrect thumbnails in Photos - Apple Support)

Same problem with photo books. It's a problem of PDF rendering.

I found a solution. It's not pretty but simple and it works!

Just resize your hires photos to max about 4500 x 3000 pixels (< 14 mpix), and all pictures will appear in the printout.

My photos are shot with 18 mpix. As long as I use them in frames significantly smaller than one page in a photo book, they render OK. As soon as they span a page (horizontally or vertically), there is a good chance not to see them in print preview and hence in books or calendars. After resizing as described, you're lucky.

    Good luck!

    Hi OT,

Tried rebuilding the library but that didn't seem to work, still the same problem.

I'm convinced the new photo app is rubbish compared to the older iPhoto. I took the exact same photos to work, imported them onto my work laptop, which is still running the older programme and it all worked beautifully. Calendar is on it's way.

After updating to the new app it now also claims some of my photos were taken in the year 1589!

It's a shame Apple continue to fix things that weren't broken.

How do I resize the photos (sorry I'm a bit of a numpty).

I've checked the ones that haven't shown up in the preview and they are bigger than 4500 x 3000.

You can resize the pictures in Preview. Open the file in Preview, then choose Tools, Adjust Size...

I use Photoshop Elements (Image, Resize, Image Size...). Probably any other image processing tool will do as well.
