Q: Windows 10 Boot Camp install won't let me install on BOOTCAMP partition on Mac Pro with SSD drive

Clean install of El Capitan, I have downloaded the Windows 10 x64 ISO and run Boot Camp installer. Once you get to the screen where you select a partition, the BOOTCAMP partition can't be installed on. If I format it and try again, still no luck. Anyone have experience with this problem or a workaround for this?

Thanks,

Patrick

Sorry don't follow. I run exact command you wrote: diskutil eraseVolume free Free disk0s5. Volume was erased, resulted in unallocated space (see diskutil just after i run the command in my previous post).

I rebooted into installer (didn't use shift+f10, sorry, not aware about this functionality) and 250~ gigs unallocated space was displayed in installer. I only pressed next button so windows created partitions automatically - apparently wrong because what is installer ranting about is partition the very same installer prepared, formatted and selected just before.

My Mac is late 2015 27'' iMac@2TB Fusion drive running El Capitan (iMac17,1, ROM: IM171.0105.B04)

    Did you install windows 10?

    downloaded here? https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10ISO

partitioned with boot camp assistant 6.0.0 (519)?

just formatted partition and pressed next?

or different apprach like partitioning via diskutil and used retail windows DVD

...because I've got nothing connected to my mac either.

Can you please boot into Mac and run some disk tests? https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/blackmagic-disk-speed-test/id425264550?mt=12

What results does this give to you? (referring to order of SSD/HDD as discussed previously here)

The Installer is correct. The FAT Partition (MSR) is what it is having issues with. What is the exact error screen? Your issues and BobMcKenzie issues are unrelated.

When I prepare partition by boot camp and just format it in windows installer, then press next:

"We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files."

Are they? Seemed to me very similar.

This error message can result from two different scenarios. One is Bob's case, where this is an external device connected, or, the second where the Bootcamp partitioning is incorrect. In his case, he did not manually use the EFI Boot from the installer.  This can lead to different scenarios.

In your case, if you let the BC run normally, without modifying any partitions, you get this error, or manually using EFI Boot and two different disk partitioning schemes, Free Space and regular FAT partitions. Can you check both the SSD and HDD EFI for any Microsoft directories?

Just after unsuccessful native BC way, both efi partitions displays very similar structure:

manually using EFI boot... do you mean use BC only to create EFI boot flash-key windows installer, and create 1) free space using diskutil 2) fat partition using diskutil  ?

    1. You have two EFI partitions, the SSD and HDD. We should check both.

    2. You currently have disk0s5 as the designated BC partition. It is FAT. To use EFI Boot, we want to erase it as Free Space and see if it will create an MSR and MSD. One issue is most likely related to the MSR being later after OSX and Recovery HD.

    1) Both EFI partitions displays very similar structure if not the same.

    2) Yes it does. It creates 4 partitions in total which one of them is MSR (16MB) and then throw different error. Let me do this again

The MSR should be about 128MB. Here is an example of a W8.1 EFI layout.

    disk0s1: EFI 200MB

    disk0s2: Mac 1.5TB

    disk0s3: Mac Recovery 619MB

    BC created:

    disk0s4: OSXRESERVED 7.4GB

Windows 10 installer automatically created from 324GB unallocated space:

    disk0s5: Recovery 450MB (433MB free)

    disk0s6: System 100MB (95MB free)

    disk0s7: MSR 16MB (16MB free)

    disk0s8: Windows 301.8GB

error: "Windows detected that the EFI system partition was formatted as NTFS. Format the EFI system partition as FAT32, and restart the installation."

Is it possible installer doesn't allocate enough space for MSR by accident
