Dec 4, 2015 11:19 PM in response to DannyGamesby K Shaffer,You may be able to upgrade the old MacBook (older version series) to Mountain Lion
OS X 10.8 through the purchase of this version from Apple online; they provide a
special download code for use in the Mac App Store as part of the purchase...
• OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 - Apple:

Once this item is fully acquired and installed, there is an update step to install, that
should be available via Software Update, or from the App Store in OS X 10.8 system.
That final step after install OS X 10.8 is10.8.5 combo update; other updates may follow
the installation of this; including any for newer applications you may have to run in it.
Download OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo)
A note of interest, for those using older applications with code from PowerPC era
such as older Microsoft Office, etc from 2008 and some other applications, the
upgrade past Snow Leopard 10.6.8 removes the ability to run a special utility that
was included in the SL 10.6.8 install, that will not run in later OS X versions. So
certain old applications will not transition to the later OS; you'd have to buy other
version software if or when that happens.
If you simply need a current browser and found Safari didn't have an update,
you could try the Firefox browser from Mozilla; it is supported by SL 10.6.8.

Be sure your computer can actually run 10.8.5 Mt Lion before buying the item.
• OS X Mountain Lion 10.8(.5) - Compatible Macs and Incompatible Macs:
Also, your computer may require more chip RAM installed; and suitable unused
hard drive storage capacity should exist for this newer OS X to reside and work;
this can tax an older computer with fuller hard disk drive. It is advised to make a
complete and full backup of the present OS X and its applications on external HDD
so as to revert should the idea not work; or to draw from and retrieve files that may
or may not make the transition from pre OS X 10.8 to that level. A Time Machine
backup will help, but you'd want to have an offline archive to restore the MacBook
that could actually start and run the computer. A clone (carbon copy or superduper)
utility can help; read and test any results before upgrading past the existing OS X.
(An upgrade is a fully new system; your older system + some apps will be by-passed.)
So some research before upgrading beyond current OS X in your Mac is recommended.
Good luck & happy computing!
