Q: Apple Pay on Apple Watch not working

Hi Everyone!

I'm a huge fan of Apple Pay, I use it anywhere that accepts it.

One feature I was eager to try out immediately when I got my Apple Watch (only 24 hours ago) was Apple Pay.

Within the first hour of me setting up my watch, I was off to McDonalds to get a Coke (it's the closet place that accepts Apple Pay), so I could test Apple Pay.

When I placed my watch next to the reader, nothing happened. The display stayed dark the entire time. To complete the transaction, I pulled out my phone and that also didn't work. I've used Apple Pay on my iPhone, at the same McDonald's many times before and it's always worked flawlessly.

Several hours later, I had went to Best Buy to purchase some wireless earbuds and once again tried using Apple Pay on my watch to complete the purchase. But sadly, nothing happened here either. The watch remained black the whole time.

While I was attempting to get it to work, I noticed my iPhone wake up (it was placed flat on the counter) and display the message - "Hold iPhone near reader" (I forget the 'exact' wording). When I gave up on the Apple Watch, I picked up my phone to complete the purchase and it worked perfectly.

Now, anytime I've setup my credit card on the iPhone I have to verify it (via a Text Message code from BofA). When I looked at the settings in the Apple Watch app on my iPhone - I saw my credit card listed already. I clicked the "Add" button next to it, which I was then prompted to add the 3 digit security code to verify it. Once I did, my credit card was placed under the header which indicates it's an active card on the watch. And within seconds, I had received a notification on the watch letting me know it was ready to use.

I assume it's setup correctly, so what am I missing? Are there any thoughts as to why my Apple Watch does nothing?

Sorry to ramble on and on. I just wanted to give you all the details in hopes that maybe someone can steer me in the right direction to solving this issue.

Thank you in advance for your help!

- Jason

    Hi Jason

In order to pay using Apple Pay on your watch, you first need to quickly double-press the side button.

Your default card will then be displayed. If you have added other cards and wish to use one of them instead, swipe to switch between cards. With your preferred card displayed, hold your watch up to the terminal:

    - The watch face should be facing and parallel with the terminal's own screen (you should not be able to see the watch face whilst paying), aligned centrally with the contactless logo on the terminal screen and held closer than 10cm.

    - It should be held in that position for up to a few seconds, until you hear the confirmation beep and haptic pulse.

    Hi Jonathan!

Thank you so much for clearing that up. I just assumed it would operate the same as it does on my iPhone. I could be wrong, but I don't remember reading anything in the Apple Watch app, or on the watch itself telling me it operates any differently than how it does on my iPhone. Assuming I didn't miss such message, I'd be willing to bet in a future update they will at least provide a message to the user telling them, it operates differently and to activate you need to press the button twice.

Again, thank you so much for helping me! ;-)
