Q: iMessage Stopped Working After Repair (Logic Board)

Hello all,

I just picked up my MacBook Pro from repairs. It needed a new logic board. I turn it on and now iMessage doesn't sync with my iPhone. It also says every contact "is not registered with iMessage". I cannot message anyone from it nor do I receive any messages.

I have tried a ton of troubleshooting threads. Turning iMessage on and off for all devices, check the hosts file, making sure there is a build and serial number, restarting the computer, etc... I checked Date and Region, as I bought this computer from the US but I've tried both United States and United Kingdom in the region and no luck.

I'm running out of options here. Anyone have any advice?

I'd rather not go back to the Apple Store if I can help it. Here in London they are absolutely mad with people and its impossible to get anything looked at.

    Hi,

And the Serial Number was valid when your checked ?

It matches the one on the box if you have it or the back/bottom/Battery compartment of the Mac ?

    Hello Linc,

I did this (saw another trouble shooting thread that had this as an option). I waiting until it donged 3 times. No change.

Please take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.

    1. Open the Messages preferences window and select the Accounts tab. On the left is a list of the messaging accounts that you've defined. Select iMessage. Make sure that the Apple ID shown is valid. If it is, check the box marked

              Enable this account

    if it's not already checked.

    2. Sign out of iMessage on all your devices and sign back in. If you've enabled two-step verification for the Apple ID that you use with iMessage, you must generate an application-specific password and enter it when prompted. Test.

    3. Take this step if you have an iPhone linked to the same Apple ID as the Mac.

Follow the instructions in this support article, under the heading

To use Continuity for SMS and MMS with your iPhone and your Mac, iPad or iPod touch

If text forwarding is already enabled on the phone, disable it and then re-enable it.

Quit and relaunch Messages on the Mac.

    Already enable.

Did this. When I signed back into iMessage on my iPhone my Macbook said, "Your Apple ID is being used on a new iPhone if you recently signed into "XXXX's iPhone" you can ignore this notification", etc... so I know that my Apple ID is detecting and syncing between iPhone and Macbook.

Under Message > Send and Receive I have it all checked as I should.

I cannot activate Text Forwarding, if that helps. A number does not pop up on my Mac at all. Could this be related to the problem?

Also, when I tried to sign into my Apple ID for again in iMessage on my Macbook it didn't go through the first time and said it timed out on sign in.

    Problem still persists.

As per another troubleshooting thread I tried to create a test account. Same problem.

I could go on torturing you with suggestions for days, but I've done that to others quite a few times, and I doubt that you can solve this problem on your own. It usually turns out to be something at Apple's end. As I understand it, iMessage was working before the machine was serviced, and it's not working now. That's a customer-service issue, in my view. If you don't want to go back to the Apple Store, click the Support link at the top of this page to schedule a call from Apple Support. You may be able to talk your way out of being charged for the call if you select "Apple ID" as the product you need help with—not the hardware model.

    Hi,

I concur with Linc in that the only option now is to contact Apple Support and ask them to sort out the Apple ID.

Due to the fact each device logging in to iMessages with the Apple ID does so with a Unique login (based around the Serial Number) it can look like a Hardware or Software issue as it only affects that one device.

However we know from the OS X 10.8.2 update that first used the Serial number in Messages  Version 7.0.1 that the issue can arise.

Posts here confirm a range of related issues where the Mac does not login to iMessages properly.

Symptoms include the Contacts turning red and saying the are "Not Registered with iMessages" or the sent iMessages immediately being marked "Not Delivered".

It also seems to occur for some at the El Capitan update.

Originally some posts around the version 7.0.1 lack of Serial Number seemed to suggest the Level 2 people at Apple Support could see the iMessages server and the issue related to the Mac's Login and would reset it. (it only works if your get the Serial Number fixed).

We suggested that calling them be tried in the later issues and for some it seemed  the same thing was done.

More recently it seems that the Level 2's are more reluctant and want to double check you have jumped through all the hoops including a Reinstall (which we don't think is needed).  They also tend to involve the Engineers and get you to collect data for them.

There is obviously a trigger that is designed to be a security feature that is being triggered.

Based on the Number of posts here the numbers involved are actually small (possibly a few thousands with variations of the issue in Mountain Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan).

Eventually it seems you get told the ID will be reset but that it takes 24 hours.

Nothing done in Messages with the iMessages account seems to reset it.

Unlike AIM there is no site to go to to confirm you are in fact you to reset things yourself when your account is suspended.

I can only suggest being polite and insisting that the Apple ID in relation to the iMessages server is reset so that the Mac can reuse the ID.

It can be frustrating as it should not be this difficult.

I hope it goes well for you.

Thank you for the help everyone.

I called Apple support, eventually got a level 2, then had to repeat everything. About 75 minutes later, he said I should reinstall my OS. I was frustrated (though they were very nice and they're based in Ireland here so a lot of fun to talk to as well) and said Id have to do it later because I had too much work to do.

I still didn't have time for a few days and today I open my computer, and suddenly it works. I have done literally nothing and it decides to fix itself after a week.

Wish I could give an example of what I did. Oh well. It is frustrating that this is happening quite a bit. The mystery still remains.. at least its fixed for me.

Good to hear the result - told you a Reinstall was not needed.
