Q: Ethernet connection to El Capitan not working

I successfully updated El Capitan on my Ethernet connected desktop on 2nd October 2015.  Then on the 22nd October the 10.11.1 update.  On 6 and 7th November I was unable to get online.  Somehow I managed to get back online on the evening of 8th November.  dont ask me how!! That last until the 19th November.  Then from the 20th November to the 26th November inclusive.  On the 27th November I logged in as Guest and managed somehow to get online again.  Until the 30th November and have been offline since with my desktop. I give these dates because I want to eliminate two potential problems:

1.  On the 8th November I attached a new Brother wireless all in one printer

2.  On the 16th November I received a new Panasonic microwave oven.

my ISP is Plusnet.  I contacted them and the answer which I thought was logical  is that I have an iPad and iPod touch that I can connext with the Internet.  So there is nothing wrong with my line.  It must be the iMac system.  Plusnet confirmed that I have the correct details in Account preferences.  I have one other email account that is iCloud.

I Have tried everything I have seen online including the discussion forums.  I am desperate to get back online on my desktop.

    is your microwave oven 802.x compatible and is it conflicting with your router?

    Probably not.

     

    Have you rebooted?

     

    Have you tried a different cable?
    Switched the same cable ends?

     

    go to >System Preferences...>Network

    Turn off the network from the preference by choosing Configure IPv4 to Off,

    then turn it back On.

    Do you get a usable network address?

     

    Do you get no address

     

    Do you get a 169.x.x.x address?

     

    Does your ISP provide you with their own address?

     

    Have your rebooteted your router/hub/cable modem/DSL modem?

     

    Are you running any 3rd party "utilities" that "clean your mac" or any "anti-virus", or any firewall or network utility?

    if so REMOVE them immediately  following the developers directions.

     

    Have you deleted (use the "-" on the interface) and recreated the Ethernet connection?

    sorry I haven't got back to you until now.  In the past I received an email saying there was a reply.

    the microwave manual does not state specifically that it is 802.x compatibale but it is a new model.

    i Have rebooted.

    switched cable ends.

    i Went to system preferences and turned off network etc. 

    THe details are: Ethernet 192.168.1.25

    configure IPv4 using DHCP

    ip address 192.168.1.64

    subnet mask 255.255.255

    router 192.168.1.25

    dns server same but greyed out.

    search domains Ian (greyed out).       ????? What is this?

     

    didn't get a 169.xxxx address. 

    Rebooted router DSL modem.

    I was running Clean my mac3 from the 12th September 2014 before this trouble started and have now deleted it, but with no effect on getting back online. Other than that I do not have anti virus or firewall or network utility.

     

    Sorry this is long but wanted to be thorough.  I hope you can help.  The only reason I can get online doing this is on my iPad.  My iPod touch is also ok.

    but there are things I need to do on my iMac on online.

    Today without doing anything differently I managed to get Safari online.  I also was able to download the latest OSX 10.11.2 update However, I get the beach ball when opening Mail app and cannot get into Preferences.  I can still get online with my iPad and iPod touch, so  my internet connection is ok.

    i Am at a loss to know what to do.  Your help would be very much appreciated.

    "Ian" does not sound like a valid search domain

    and 192.168.1.25 for the router sounds like there is a setting in the router that was either set up by your ISP for a specific reason or there is a problem with the config.

    DNS needs to be something, thats the service that turns "apple.com" on your end into 17.172.224.47 which allows your computer to get there

    Non-responsive DNS server or invalid DNS configuration can cause long delay before webpages load - Apple Support

    My advice to you is REBOOT the router and set it to its defaults and if the mac works, it's the router, regardless of any other device working, because it works for one system an not another is not a rule for it to be working, there could be other reasons the router is preventing the Mac from working correctly and letting the iPad work fine. It needs to be ruled out or validated as a possible cause.

     

    If rebooting your router does not remedy this issue you can use the Manual setting for your ethernet using the values provided by your router

     

    ip address 192.168.1.64

     

    subnet mask 255.255.255

    (this is incorrect as well, it should be 255.255.255.0)

     

    router/default gateway 192.168.1.25

    (this should be 192.168.1.1 , unless your ISP provides you this router)

     

    your DNS can be provided by your ISP but if they don't provide this you can use the Google Public DNS

    DNS 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

    Thank you for your comments.  This afternoon I spent 90 minutes on the 0800 Apple help line, going through various tests to establish an answer to my problem with Apple.  because of the spinning beach ball I could not get to preferences to make any corrections or see what was listed under accounts.  We shared screens, and I was guided into Safe Mode, deleted various files in Library.  In the end I spent time with another Senior Guru! And after about half an hour it was sorted to my satisfaction.  So all is well that ends well.

    nevertheless I will check in the morning the information you have give me.  So it won't be wasted.
