Q: I have a 5g IPod touch.  I was wondering if it can get viruses.

I  went on a website and recieved a message telling me a had a virus in the appearing to be official apple "ok" button.  It said to follow directions to get rid of it, although i didn't.  I looked online and got mostly results saying iPods can't get viruses (some saying they can), though the forums were dated.  I also got reports of the same thing happening and things saying the messages can come up saying they look like the official messages.  I'm frantically panicking not knowing who to believe and what to do.  Please help!!

iPod touch, iOS 9.1

No, it can't get a virus. Any messages saying that it did are scams.

iPods do not get viruses with normal use of an iPod.  Jailbreaking can lead to the introduction of viruses and trojan and similar harmful programs.  But you would know if your iPod was jailbroken because doing so is really quite a hassle.  The worst that can happen in normal use is a bad website tries to take over safari or other browsers and you get messages like the one you got or a lot of advertisements.  You can fix that by going Setting > Safari > Clear History and Website Data and then restarting the iPod.  Other browsers available from the App Store have similar options for cleaning the history and cache removing the problem.  I suggest you do that now if that message persists.
