Q: Apple ID problem

Hello,

This account is actually my mothers. She has an old mac which I am trying to help her upgrade. I personally do not use macs so bare with my ignorance in regards to how things are done around here.

she has an old imac core 2 duo running 10.6.8 and I would like to upgrade to El Capitan (or even Yosemite) as some software she use has discontinued support for 10.6.8. My Mac is listed as being able to run.

I understand I need to download this via the app store.

However, I have never had an account there before. I tried to create a new one but when I try to configure the account and add a payment method (which I don't really want to give as all I want is the Free El Capitan but ok I need to get past the screen) it throws a red error:

for assistance, contact iTunes support at www.apple.com/support/itunes/ww

And we are just stuck there... unable to download our FREE piece of software.

Which when I go there is just a link to every apple site in the world... I then spent 1-2 hours trying to find support for us here in Australia where they then wanted $39 just to "chat" about the issue online...

Can someone... anyone help me get out of this nightmare and upgrade this iMac...

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Ok I finally figured it out myself

You CANNOT it seems,  configure your app store account via the app store application...

You need to close it and configure your account in itunes....

Why the appstore app could not produce i reasonable error message I will never understand.

To check if your mac is capable of running El Capitan: Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

To create a Apple ID without payment details: Create an iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store account without a credit card or other payment method - Apple Support

You can use this link to contact iTunes Support: https://getsupport.apple.com/

You should also check http://roaringapps.com/ to see if all of the current programs that are on your mac will still be able to work, as El Capitan does not support PowerPC programs that were able to run in Snow Leopard.
