Dec 8, 2015 5:20 AM in response to meremooby JimmyCMPIT,Mac OS X 10.11.1 breaks HDMI output (MacBook Pro 13")
While the OP does not resolve the original issue he does point out an issue I've seen inherent to TB to HDMI, not necessarly exclusive to 10.11
the earlier mac airs had USB 2.0 and Mini Display port out puts, the newer airs have USB 3.0 and TB ports. If you're all on the same model mac are you all on the same year mac?
While it could also be the computer, the OS, the HDMI cable, or even the display you are trying to connect to have you tried a different model adapter?
Do you see any options for the display on your Display prefs? Have you tried tried any other resolutions that may be hidden from your selection unless you OPT+LMB on the "SCALED" radio button?

Dec 8, 2015 6:23 AM in response to JimmyCMPITby meremoo,One of my students has an early 2014 mac air and mine is an early 2015 so that might make a difference.
My computer isn't registering that anything is connected to my TB port at all. Even when I hold options and press "detect displays". I even searched the thunderbolt under system report and while I have my computer plugged to the TB and the tv. Also, when I look at my scaled list, 1080p is not available.
I honestly am lost. Thank you tremendously for your help!!

Dec 8, 2015 6:30 AM in response to meremooby JimmyCMPIT,if possible see if you can make an appointment with an apple store rep though apple
it may be the TB port doesn't recognize the adapter which could be the adapter or the port. If there is a problem with the port and you are under warranty you may be eligible for a replacement logic board which is in your best interest go get done before the warranty runs out. if it's the cable you may just have a finicky port and the cable is the issue.
