Q: How can I prevent quicktime from automatically associating file types?

In Windows 7 I could not prevent QuickTime from reassigning itself to my video files. I tried changing QuickTime preferences in the "Edit>Preferences>QuickTime Preferences>About QuickTime" area, but there was no disable selection. I disassociated all the file types in Windows 7 "Start>Settings>Default Programs" and still, like an annoying but benevolent virus, QuickTime kept changing my preferences. How can annoying the user be a good marketing practice? The only solution I've found is uninstalling QuickTime.

Is there a solution to this bug?

null, Windows 7

In the QuickTime control panel you choose what file types for QT to handle, by clicking on the Browser tab to File Types & Mime Settings at the bottom.

If those settings are not holding it could likely be permissions related. To check that go to.

C:\Program Files (x86)\QuickTime\QTSystem and find QuickTime cpl in the list, this is the file for the QuickTime control panel. If you double click on it the QuickTime control panel will open. But right click on it and go to Properties and then click on the Security tab, to see what User Account owns QuickTime
