Q: Why is the Remote App not compatible with 4th gen Apple TV?

Is it Apple's plan to release an update to the Remote app to support the 4th gen ATV or are they ditching the app?

I have also sent feedback to Apple already, but I think it's important that we document our grievances about the ATV 4G in forums and social media so the discussion is indexed and documented rather than being privately held and hidden by Apple's customer service gestapo. I may be alone in this because I have never read this sentiment expressed by others, but I simply hate Siri in all her manifestations and the fact that the Siri Remote is being forced upon me with the new ATV makes me very angry and frustrated. To be fair, Siri is fairly sophisticated and I acknowledge it seems to work well for some, but it rarely works out for me. I often have to repeat myself to her, and she often gives me incorrect or irrelevant results, all of which ends up taking more time than it would have for me to type my query out to begin with (on an actual keyboard, that is; not including the monstrosity that is the letter-at-a-time Siri Remote methodology). And Siri searches don't even begin to cover most of the content that is available on the ATV, anyway, leaving much to be desired even when it works as expected. In answer to the OP, Apple, in their fashion, are trying to force users to use the Siri Remote because it serves their purpose. If you could connect a keyboard and mouse to your ATV, and download Google Docs or Office 365 - hey! Waddya know? You've got yourself a pretty capable computer! Maybe you can hold off on that new iPad or Macbook for a year or two? And if you could use your iPhone to control the ATV (it has all of the same capabilities), what incentive is there to use (and purchase extras of) the overhyped, overpriced and underwhelming Siri Remote? None, IMO. I truly hope Apple finds Jesus on this issue. I've owned multiple units of every generation of ATV and purchased numerous more for friends and family and I can honestly vow that unless they rectify these issues I won't be buying any more.

FYI, they have released the 9.1 update and I confirmed that my remote app is now working on the ATV4 (including text entry)...

He he.  Yes, thanks for saying so. I'm well aware of such tactics which is why I invoked the Gestapo metaphor. I believe it's all an attempt to curate the level of criticism that's visible on the intertubes.

Thank you Protodd.  The Remote app now works for me as well on the gen 4 Apple TV with the latest tvOS 9.1.

I'd like to think Apple was encouraged to update Remote app functionality on the new ATV given all of the feedback they got from frustrated users. If so, thank you to everyone who wrote in to Apple with their comments.

So, TVOS got an upgrade? iOS 9.1 is the latest on phones and iPads. So, ATV4 with TVOS 9.1 now works with the Remote app in iOS? If so, I'll go buy one.

9.2 is the latest for iOS and 9.1 is the latest for tvOS. Both have updates waiting (at least here in US mountain time).  The remote app works on the ATV4 via iPhone or iPad. I have also heard the watch app works too though I don't have one to confirm myself...

Yes, I upgraded to tvOS 9.1 today which was required to get the Remote app to work with the gen 4 ATV.  I also updated my iPhone to iOS 9.2 so I'm not sure that was also required to get the Remote app to work.  There were no recent updates to the Remote app.

Thank you for sharing.  This, and the fact that even the current Remote app works now, after the tvOS update to 9.1, are awesome news!

I am experiencing a recurring error whenever I attempt to access my iTunes library through the Remote App utilizing the keyboard/text search.  I can use my iPad Pro as a "trackpad" to access and play content.

Error reads - "An unknown error occurred, please check your library and try again."

This error also occurs on an iPad2 as well as iPadAir using Remote App.

I have reported this to Apple Support but wanted to share incase others are having the same issue.

Did you actually get your Apple TV and IOS device to connect? I have been trying sine I got an update for Remote and no matter what I try it ill not see my Apple TV. I have tried Home Sharing and Manually adding it and nothing. I would be interested in hearing how it worked for you.

    I am using IOS 9.2

EDIT: I didn't notice I had tvOS 9.0.1. I am now updating to 9.1 I have my Apple TV set to automatically update but I guess they haven't pushed it to everyone yet.

    thanks,

    Tyson

Have you updated your ATV software (tvOS 9.1)?  I don't believe that iOS 9.2 has any impact. But as soon as I updated the ATV my remote app worked. I already had it setup because of ATV2&3 but I didn't have to do anything once I updated the ATV software...
