Q: Need help with 'Other' on my Mac HD

Hi all, anybody help me with this issue? Ive read up previous support tickets in a effort to get this sorted but my problem seems to be growing.

S my mac is as follows:

OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011)

2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

20 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Macintosh HD

My issue is the 'Other' part of the HD memory has been slowly growing over the last few weeks, Ive cleared out all the obvious  places, secure trashed all my films, edited down my apps I dont need, deleted tons of Photographs,  today I cleared my main cache, must of been over 100 items in there alone.

But still 'other' keeps growing, and I got my first warning tonight stating my Startup disc is almost full.. currently;y I have 407.9mb free on my Mac HD.

Can anybody walk me through steps to get this back at all?

Many thanks in advance,

Malcolm

quick update, since I posted this, I restarted my machine, and things have changed, unfortunately for the worst, 'Other' has now grown from 748GB to 998GB, and Ive done nothing, in fact that whole storage tab seems to be showing me wrong info I think, it can't be moving about so much,

My backup for Time Machine however, has lost the 1.23 TB allocated to other, and is now showing 1.23TB of backup (Pink)...

    any help gratefully received..

By chance do you use any antivirus or cleaning apps on this computer?

Yes, Ive been doing this exercise all week, deleting tons of Images from Photos, films from my i-tunes, music files, main cache, Ive moved everything from my desk top onto an external Hard Drive, so the is nothing on the desktop other than daily working files, most of which i will secure delete at the end of the day.

    any other suggestions?

That is likely your problem. OS X does not repeat DOES NOT need any third party utilities to clean it or keep it in good shape. CleanMyMac is considered malware and the other app while harmless is likely not necessary. Uninstall both apps ASAP and the run an EtreCheck report of your system. We can then look for obvious issues. Please click the link, download the app and run the report. Once you have the report, please copy and paste it to your reply to this post.

To be honest you have made a pretty good mess of your system by adding a LOT of unnecessary junk to it. OS X does not need any third party utilities to keep it running well. In fact, if left alone and only doing Software Updates via the Mac App Store OS X tends to run well for years. Normally I do not recommend doing an erase and manual install of OS X and applications however because you have so much junk added I am making an exception

My recommendation is to do an erase and install of OS X and then manually install your apps. DO NOT install any cleaning, third party utilities (such as Little Snitch) or other worthless apps such as the Seagate, Paragon NTFS, ClamXAV, etc onto your system. I would recommend that you clone your system prior to doing the erase, then install OS X and then manually restore your critical data and then manually install any third party apps that you must have. In addition, you may want to consider upgrading the RAM from the basic 4GB to 8 or 12GB.

Good luck, you have some work ahead of you!

Cloning the HD requires an external HD and a cloning app such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. I believe SuperDuper has a trial version you can use. You can also use Disk Utility to clone the HD, here is a video that explains how:

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:

              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash

    In Photos:

File Show Recently Deleted Delete All

Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.

According to Apple documentation, you need at least 8 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.

See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space. A common waste of space is old iTunes backups of mobile devices. As illustrated in this support article, select the Devices tab in the iTunes preferences window, select the backups you want to delete, and click Delete Backups. Keep at least one backup of each device that you still use.

You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.

Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.

Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.

ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.

    Back up all data now.

Install the app in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.

Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

    For ODS:

    security execute-with-privileges /A*/OmniDiskSweeper.app/*/M*/* 2>&-

    For GP:

    security execute-with-privileges /A*/GrandPerspective.app/*/M*/* 2>&-

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password.

The application window will open behind other open windows. When you scan a volume, the window will eventually show all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.

I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.

When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

Thanks for the advise guys, Ive toiled on deleting allot from the suggestions above, an awful lot from my I-Photo Library. I did notice I have both i-Photo and Photos installed, would I be right in assuming that both use the same database / library? if not there could be a big saving there...

Ive gained about 2GB breathing space, but the readout in Storage / My Mac is never the same twice, seems to be jumping about a bit... Ive re indexed spotlight just now, so hopeful I should start seeing consistency in line with data I'm secure deleting.

I'm going to try getting a rid of everything before I attempt an erase and manual install of OS X, so to that end Ive got rid of Little Snitch, Seagate, Paragon NTFS, ClamXAV, applications, deleted out my i-tunes / i-Phone / Tablet back-ups, and secure deleted the lot. more images going as we speak...did my main Cache yesterday, there is a library Cache also I think.

    any more suggestions guys?
