Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

    Excellent.

My 32GB iPad Pro started the morning lock-up last week after a reset to rectify a Smart Keyboard issue.

Changing cables didn't affect the situation.

After getting tired of hard resetting every morning, I am following the suggestions in this thread with the exception of downloading 9.2. So far, after topping up the battery this afternoon, the iPad booted with no issues.

We'll see what tomorrow morning brings after charging overnight.

If it still goes to black screen I'll download 9.2.

Thanks for moderating the thread. Sorta like herding cats but someone's gotta do it.   ;-)

    TTFN,

Ok all, so far 8.5 hours of sitting on the charger at 100%, sitting with the screen off, and when I press the home button at 100% charge, hey siri turned off the ipad screen turns on like it should.

    IOS 9.2 installed this morning.

    128GB LTE ipad pro.

Charger and cable that came with the ipad pro.

Bluetooth on, wifi on, lte on.

Sitting on 100% charge for the last 9 hours, screen wakes up properly.

So far it looks like IOS 9.2 has fixed the issue.

Upgraded to iOS 9.2 last night while the iPad Pro was plugged in. The Pro didn't wake up dead this morning and the charge was full. So far so good.

It's interesting that Apple didn't mention the dead iPad Pros as one of the things the iOS update fixes, though.

If your iPad Pro stops responding and the screen is black - Apple Support

Learn what to do if your iPad Pro doesn't respond when you press buttons or tap on the screen, and the screen is black.

To get back to using your iPad Pro, force restart it by pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.

Updating your iPad Pro to iOS 9.2 or later might prevent this issue from occurring in the future.

Might fix the problem! Fingers crossed it does.

HI, all. Downloaded latest update 9.2 yesterday. So far so good. It charged to 100% with my putting hey Siri and Siri off  (as it was when the original fault occurred) and ipad pro was alive this morning. So looks like 9.2 might be the final fix... Only time will tell. Thanks to all - has been emotional !

The Pro woke up properly this morning.

    Just downloaded 9.2 public.

    So far, so good.

Thanks varchar and others. This was an informative and productive thread that provided viable workarounds while waiting for Apple to come up with a fix.

(my previous posts outline other testing I did with IOS 9.2 right after release on 12/8)

2nd round of testing: Overnight test with IOS 9.2 RELEASE:

Test 1,2: outlined in my prior posts.

Test 3: ipad pro 128GB lte: hey siri off, mute on, volume 0% 100% charge, overnight charging for 7 hours, immediate wake on home button press.

Test 4: ipad pro 128GB lte: hey siri off, mute off, volume 0%, wifi off, bluetooth off, airplane mode on, 100% battery, 3 hour charge, immediate wake on home button press.

One interesting note is that I did have to do a restart AFTER installing IOS 9.2 one time because either the indexing, or something was causing it to perform slowly, as well as causing my BETA version of textastic for the ipad Pro to act wonky (i.e. no icon presses being recognized, text area not functioning, etc).  After restarting after the install was complete I have had no issues since.  (Again, chalking it up to either the indexing process or something that is still being setup but has since finished).

Chargers were a combination between original charger/cable and iphone 6s plus charger/cable, and 12w charger and appletv lightning cable.

So far it's looking good everyone that ios 9.2 RELEASE is the solution.

If anyone is reading this, this is for the "problem" where the ipad pro would charge to 100% and then not recognize any button presses, thus keeping the screen blank and requiring a hard restart (holding down home + power for around 20 seconds until the ipad rebooted).

THIS IS NOT BEING TESTED FOR FAULTY HARDWARE THAT WON'T CHARGE.  (Yes, all caps, so everyone understands that's not this thread).

Finally, I am at all NOT upset, the iPad Pro is a FANTASTIC device, and combined with the pencil an amazing product.  In fact I may quit buying macbook pro's and start utilizing the iMac (better suited for my needs, but less portable) since I carry the iPad Pro around with me EVERYWHERE.  I use the onscreen keyboard in landscape and type at about 85% of my normal typing rate.  (80wpm).  The form factor for this product really provides a shine to iOS that is amazing.  I just hope more apps are updated to support the iPad pro onscreen keyboard, or that apple finds a way to force the ipad pro onscreen keyboard into use for all those apps that are showing the generic ipad keyboard (waaay too big and missing the full keyboard functionality).

I glad 9.2 works ; it means I can finally purchase an iPad Pro.

But I'm hoping that someone can explain the logic behind Apple's refusal to keep customers apprised of their findings and progress in addressing this huge glitch, which, as pointed out by many posters here, is so prevalent that it probably was known about by release day. I think their reticence proved so maddening to many loyal customers around the world that they may not consider Apple products in the future. Keeping irate customers in the dark seems to have no upside for the company, so I'm asking why they do it. It's not just Apple; the practice seems widespread, so there must be logic to it, but it escapes me. Just curious, and I thought someone with experience in the industry might be able to explain it.

    Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by in the dark.  They acknowledged it, put up a thread that explained the temporary solution and stated that they were investigating it.  It's irresponsible for a company to just shoot at the hip and say this problem will be fixed by next ios release.  The practice that is widespread is bad customer service i.e. a company not following up on faulty products (Apple has a history of replacing products that are faulty years after they have been purchased, there are few if any other companies that have a record of doing that for the general consumer).

Again, the purpose of this thread was to bring to light an issue that has a 20 second fix once a day and that wasn't life threatening or changing other than essentially purposely telling your ipad to turn on versus it always being on.

This problem is important to be fixed for the general satisfaction, but not something that should cause so much consternation.  As has been mentioned over and over, Apple never kept anyone in the dark, the thread was a means to bring attention to the problem, help one another find temporary fixes/workarounds, and provide feedback on solutions.  As such, there's no need to harp on a perceived wrong when there was none.

An actual wrong that would require Apple to be forthright beyond what they were on the forums here would be something such as an ipad bursting into flames for thousands of customers while their music was playing.  This was not such a case.

9.2 has worked so far for me and im a happy bunny. I've a nice piece of kit, but then i had that before, it just had what was at the end of the day a niggling little issue in regards charging. I find it odd to see comments about people returning their iPads and never using Apple again given that there were workaround solutions posted here and Apple have actively been working on a permanent solution with an iOS upgrade. I'd have had a real moan if this niggling issue had prevented me from using the iPad or made it a real pain to use, but it didn't.

CAnt ant wait for the Pencil to arrive though, fingers crossed its not too long a wait for stocks to arrive

    Hi Graeme S and varchar,

    are you employees of Apple?

I agree with "milleron" that it is very strange that we had to wait  about 4 (?) weeks for this update and that apple did not publish a special update for the ones to suffer. And especially that the support did not know what we knew in this forum! "Reset your iPad Pro" or "Replace it" was the most given answer of the official support! Stupid!

    Moppel,

I'm not an employee of Apple, although I've been asked that when I hang around the Apple stores and help people with problems that the Genius bar person didn't know how to resolve or hadn't heard of.

This update isn't an update for the iPad Pro "full charge, black screen" issue since IOS 9.2 was slated to hold other things; however, whatever changes were put into IOS 9.2 probably had placeholders in IOS 9.1 which is what was causing the problems we were seeing.  I've written about my thoughts on Apple's support personnel in my other posts so I won't go into it here, but ultimately you cross your fingers and hope for the "passionate" ones to help you since they will know what's going on, and not a career "I need to make $$" one as they generally are only aware of the corporate broad knowledge.

Reset and Replace is pretty standard for a large corporation, which Apple should be considered a large corporation since they make more money than almost every other company in existence.

Basically though it's the same as going to the doctor and expecting every doctor to know everything every other doctor knows.  Just not gonna happen.  Some will have amazing amounts of knowledge and can help you while others will take your temp and prescribe you a generic anti-biotic since that's the standard text book procedure.

No, I'm not employed by Apple, I have been using their products since 1990 though, I've also used Windows based machines, Android phones, and Linux servers. Guess what, new tech often have little glitches when it comes out. It's a first world problem though really isn't it? People getting overexcited because they've had to wait 15 seconds or so to boot their iPad after a full charge, come on, if that's an outrage to you then you need to look around you more. Apple did issue a workaround solution that worked until the iOS upgrade, so what's the big problem, have you got an iPad Pro that's working after the upgrade? If you can answer yes then be happy you can save 15 seconds starting it up (if you'd not followed the workaround solution mentioned in this discussion).

The pencil is amazing.  I just got mine this last weekend via fedex.  Pretty much opens the ipad up to being an amazing canvas for all things art.  If people are looking for an alternate navigation device then they'll be sorely disappointed, but then again, there's a reason Apple is using the pencil moniker, since people think of stylus as a navigational tool, whereas no one thinks a pencil is a navigational tool (although, the press seems to want to keep calling it an iStylus).

FINAL IOS 9.2 Public Release test for all who care (test 5):

6 hours of charging with nothing on but airplane mode (wifi off, bluetooth off, nightmode off, mute off, screen rotate off, hey siri off).  No lockups, no black screen, prompt display of the screen when the home button is pressed.  Charger still plugged into iPad.  Unplugging charger causes the screen to turn on briefly indicating normal use-age.

So, it seems that all the things that were mentioned in regards to locking up appear to be resolved with the IOS 9.2 public release.  If you're reading this and are unsure of any other tests just read my past posts as I have outlined 5 other tests that I've done with varying options to see if the IOS 9.2 public release appears to fix other use cases.
