Q: El Capitan running slowly?

Is anyone else having the issue of your Mac running wicked slow after the new El Capitan update? Word, Safari, Preview, and iTunes wouldn't open- they froze and I had to force quit them. Even typing this there is a major lag and the pinwheel appears. What's up with that? So far I hate how slow it's making my mac.

Ditch the lot!  The .log files might start coming back in again but in my case it's made no difference.  It was the zip ones causing the hassle.

I can only sympathise with you.  I am surprised and quite miffed that Apple has not found a fix for whatever's going on.  There seems to have been a real silence from them over this issue.  By now, and after all these posts, surely something should have been done ...

My iMac has been running slow since upgrading to El Capitan. Thank goodness I did install it on my laptop too. As frustrating as this has been, I am at least relieved to know that I am not the only one!

Here's hoping that Apple is doing something about this!

THANX!  Your simple post fixed my 15" pro!   I suspect the disk will still need to index as noted elsewhere on this topic,  it's not as fast as my MacBook Air 11" 2GB circa 2010, but close... I ran a test as it was and it was taking 3:23 minutes to do what it now takes 41 seconds to do... that the 11" did in 32 seconds...  I'll let it run over night to index.  I just bought this used... when I was looking at it we thought it seemed a little slow... he had just loaded El Capitan... I got it home and was concerned I'd bought a brick... glad I found this posting...

THIS PROCESS made a DRAMATIC improvement on my early 2011 - i7 2.3GHz pro 15"... thank you!

Try this , I did and it helped speed it up :

    1. Shut down your Macbook
    2. Plug it into the power socket
    3. Hold down the left shift, option and control keys together with the power button for 10 seconds (your Macbook shouldn’t turn on)
    4. Turn on your Macbook like normal.

iMac (mid 2010, 2.8 i5 12G) running slow. AHT and EtreCheck came back negative, and finally did a fresh install of El Capitan, but still no help. Boot-up and app start still very slow ("Not Responding" at times in Activity Monitor).  Now, my questions is, is AHT bullet proof in diagnosis of HD failure?  My HD is making some constant sound which does not seem right.....  Also, would my iMac support SSD drive?

I'm downloading it now; if this doesn't work, I'm doing a clean reinstall, I'm out of other options.

    Bad Apple. Bad.

    Hooray Miguel,

Your recommendations were simple and well explained ... and I followed them and ended my nightmare that began with the install of El Capitan.

    Thanks!

The update did not help. I had to completely erase the disk and do a completely clean install, from scratch—and now my Mac is happy again.

    Not impressed, Apple—*not* impressed.

When I unchecked a bunch of preferences in spotlight I thought it was fixed. But a few days later I'm getting random pinwheels everywhere again.

I've now just deleted my zip files on the mail folder like Miguel has suggested - I really don't know what they're for so I hope I'm not deleting anything important?

When I was looking at that file: ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Logs/Mail/

I observed the log files being created every minute. I don't know if this is supposed to happen or not... ?

The main issue I had was with Safari and Chrome loading at a snail's pace. By logging in as a Guest I discovered that Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop kept requesting permission to connect. Logging back in as the Administrator, I used the Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop uninstaller and hey presto, Safari and Chrome were back to normal.

NO. I had to wipe the drive and install Yosemite. It's a 2010 mac mini that has never ran faster in it's life on any previous OS.

El Capitan just had a slew of problems..Server didn't run right, constant spinning wheel..and that was after a clean install of El.

so...I just think it's not an "improved performance" as advertised.  Maybe for 2015 and newer machines..maybe..but someone else here on this thread got a new iMac last week out of the box and upgraded right away to El Capitan.  They said in all their 22 years using mac..they've never felt such a lag just to open System Preferences.

They should've said for 2015 and newer machines - recommended only.

When your hardware on your iPhone is too old..they don't give you the UPDATE iOS update option. They just stop the available updates...

soooooo why not apply the same logic....with the desktops/laptops?
