Q: How do you enable dictation with smart keyboard?

I just purchased an iPad Pro and am now trying to pick out a good keyboard. I use dictation a lot and was wondering if there was a shortcut to enable dictation with the Smart Keyboard. At the Apple Store the staff didn't know how to do this and there is no dedicated dictation button.

iPad, iOS 9.1, IPad Pro model

I appreciate the response SSTEIN. I'm not sure what you mean by "put the emoji on" though. I think I found the way to do it though. You have to go to the settings and allow custom keyboards. It mentions a security issue but that seems to relate to external keyboards? Once that customization was made , the microphone shows up.

Since iOS 8, 'Allowing custom keyboards' refers to the ability to use other soft keyboards (i.e.: Swyft, etc) created by non-Apple developers. These 3rd party keyboards are a security risk as it can record your keystrokes and you have yo trust that the developer doesn't misuse information collected by the recorded keystroke data. My original post was  regarding a need for an EXTERNAL keyboard where the dictation command can be enabled (either via keystroke or the appearance of a soft button the the screen. Right now, the only way to enable dictation is to disconnect the external keyboard and activate the soft keyboard. As a physician who dictates a lot of charts, I use a combination of typing an occasional sentence and dictating longer text as I'm a horrible typist.

Just a thought - does the "Fn Fn" command (pressing the Fn button twice) activate dictation similar to how it works on the Mac. I currently don't have an external keyboard to test out this theory.

you are correct and have found the answer until Apple corrects the program.

    To repeat:

Place any emoji   , on the document, then hit ABC, then the software keyboard comes up with the dictation microphone!  Works great!

When you want to use dictation lift your iPad off of the keyboard without disconnecting it from the smart connector, press on the mic button on the on screen keyboard then put the iPad back down on the keyboard (the soft keyboard will disappear but dictation is still going) and continue dictating until you're done.

This proves that all Apple really needs to do to address this problem, is add a shortcut.

    Yup,

This works, too, and I agree.

Apple won't see any of our suggestions until we send our feedback where it needs to go.

Send Apple feedback about the microphone Bluetooth keyboard and smart keyboard shortcut idea to Apple here.

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

I have done this several times about this issue, but will send another, again.

Good Luck & get your feeedback out there!

Agreed, and I sent them the same info before posting it to prove all it needs is a shortcut.
