    Hello,

The iphone 5s is shipping a qualcomm LTE chipsed : Qualcomm MDM9615M LTE Modem (proof : https://fr.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone+5s+Teardown/17383)

As said here on the official manufacturer website : https://www.qualcomm.com/products/gobi/modems/specs

    The Qualcomm MDM9615M supports VoLte.

So, the iphone 5s SUPPORTS VoLTE, because its hardware supports this protocol.

But as we see on apple ios 9.2 update, they don't want to enable it on the baseband for obvious marketing reasons !

Apple should stop lying to its consumers ...

The iPhone SE  (should have been 5SE) announced today 03/21/2016 apparently supports voice over LTE.  It has a faster ARM A9 processor matching the iPhone 6s so perhaps it has more capability to support the Qualcomm radio chip.  However, the radio chip in the iPhone SE does not have all the LTE bands provided by the iPhone 6s.   With all that said, I have read about people have issues using voice of LTE.  Power consumption seemed to be higher so the battery did not last as long.  The GSM radio or the CDM radio for voice calls may actually be more energy efficient than using voice over LTE on the data channels.  It will be interesting to hear about the iPhone SE in the future and how it handles voice of LTE.   You would think the iOS 9 software could be updated for the iPhone 5s to handle voice over LTE.  I have an OOMA app that allows me to do voice over WIFI fairly reliably on my iPhone 5S so it seems it would be possible to do voice over LTE on it as well but perhaps at a slower pace.

I just saw after updating to ios10 that there is an option in Mobile Data -> Mobile Data Option -> Voice -> here is option of 4G. Does it enable voice over 4G?

If this option is for data only then i think they do not give this option in 'Voice' column.

What model of iPhone are you using when you see this with ios10?

iPhone 5, 5s, 5SE, 6, or 6S.   The iPhone 7 is not out just yet but tomorrow.

It was not clear from your comment.

We do believe the 5S hardware can support it.

You have to have a 4G connection that supports LTE data to use Voice over the LTE data channel  (VOLTE).

It will not work if your carrier (e.g., verizon) is only giving you a 3G or lesser type of connection.

Accordingly, whether you can use it may also be a function of your cell site connection and where you are located, whether or not you can make a 4G connection between the base station near the antenna and your mobile phone device.  If your connection is weak, you are unlikely to get the 4G connection and be able to use VOLTE.

If it works, watch your power consumption and your data consumption if you are on a measured data plan.
