Q: Safari/App Store/Firefox wont work but Chrome will

Over The last week safari has become unusable. The program launches fine but wont load webpages.. Very occasionally it will load half a page and then stop.

Other Mac apps (firefox as well) that use the internet behave in a similar manner.  However chrome seems to be working fine.

I haven't recently updated or changed any major software so I'm at a loss to what caused the breakdown.

Other computers in the office are working fine.

I'm running OSX 10.9.5 .. I've spent days trying many of the suggested fixes online for this problem to no avail.

Including.. resetting mdnsresponder, changing proxy settings, different user profiles, turning firewall on/off

The only thing that resolved the matter was booting in safe mode.

Anyhelp would be greatly appreciated, as im really running out of options here and dont want to re-install the entire OS.

Thankyou!
Raoul

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

    Thanks Eric,

I also tried again in Safe mode and found that the internet was intermittent there as well now.

Maybe it is something to do with Network here?

Just strange as on newer macs here with yosemite, safari is fine. Just on my Maverick's Safari/app store.. usually not working at all. Dont have another mavericks machine to compare with.

But Chrome always fine. Very strange.

    Thanks for your help!

As an experiment, change your DNS server.

    System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> DNS -> [+]

    OpenDNS.org

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

    Google DNS

    8.8.8.8

    8.8.4.4

If that does not change anything, just use the [-] to remove the experimental entries.

Generally speaking, your home routers becomes the default local DNS server, which then forwards any requests it does not have cached to the DNS server the ISP provided.

Home routers can sometimes get into a strange state.  Your ISP's DNS servers can sometimes get into a strange state.   Specifying your own DNS server is a way to bypass those 2 and see if there is an issue with them.

NOTE:  When I do some searching on Chrome and DNS, I am getting some indication that Chrome might be probing more than 1 DNS server at the saem time (typical DNS behavior is ask first DNS server in list of DNS servers, if request times out, ask the next, if times out, ask the 3rd, if times out, quit; the timeout can be 30 seconds).  So if the first DNS server is responding slowly, that could make Chrome more responsive.

And the other thing I'm seeing is maybe Chrome is using its own DNS servers if the system provided DNS servers do not support IPv6 DNS queries.  So that could be a difference for Chrome that Safari and Firefox are not getting.

Eehh Gadz Bob.. I think you've fixed it! I did try a similar thing in changing the DNS servers a few days ago.. but didnt make any difference at the time.

But this time.. hey presto. I'll see how it goes and see if it stays good.   Backup option for me is to buy a 20m ethernet cable and connect in directly.

Is looking more and more to be a problem with the network setup, more so than my comp.

    Thanks again.

    I Spoke too soon =(

Worked for about 2 hours but is now back to being broken.

    Quite hard to pin down.

I'm still assuming its a network issue as i managed to keep a stable connection when using my phone as a wired and wireless hotspot.

I'm guessing this is something i should take up with the network administrator. Current requests from him haven't got much beyond turn it on and off again - He's reluctant to accept it could have anything to do with the network!

    Thanks!

Over The last week safari has become unusable.

If you have not been changing software on your Mac in the last week, then it is more likely something outside your Mac.  And since it is a network issue, that would tend to point to your local network.

I also tried again in Safe mode and found that the internet was intermittent there as well now.

That for the most part rules out 3rd party software on your Mac.

He's reluctant to accept it could have anything to do with the network!

Of course.  Debugging networking issues are a pain, and then throw in the mix a Mac (I'm guessing the network admin is a Windows person).

Backup option for me is to buy a 20m ethernet cable and connect in directly.

Yes, you should give that a try.  Often times a work setup has the WiFi on a different subnet from the Ethernet, with different edge routers for each before they merge into the rest of the company network.  That would be a way to isolate parts of the company network to see if different equipment has different results.

Also you might want to fire up the OS X Wireless Diagnostics

    When you are having issues,

Hold the "Option/Alt" Key -> Click on the WiFi menu icon -> Select "Wireless Diagnostics..."

1st run the diagnostic and see if anything interesting comes up.

    2nd.  Wireless Diagnostics -> Window -> Utilities -> Wi-Fi Scan

see if you are getting good WiFi signals.  RSSI should be low numbers (-30's, -40's would be good, -80's -90's would suck).  'Noise' should be -92 (-80's is OK as well, much lower than that and you are getting too much interference, especially if the RSSI is not very strong).

You can also look at the 'Performance' tab.

Basically you are looking to see if it is your WiFi connection that is the problem.
