Q: How to really delete photos in Photos?

I deleted some photos (movies actually) in Photos to free some disk space. The size of the Photos library shrinks, but I don't get more space in my hard disk and the size of the iPhoto library does not shrink. I can not open the iPhotHow can I really get the photos from my disk?

ok, great, thanks. But is there a way to scan the entire harddrive with this program? For some reason I cannot locate the "MacintoshHD" within the Grand Perspective app...

    Thanks in advance!

ok, sorry, I must've been blind to not find the HD itself...however, after letting the program scan my harddrive it did not find any photo-related files. Also, when I run the disk utility program it says that I have roughly 120GB available, however, in the "about my mac" section it is stated that I only have 40GB available. The difference of 80GB is roughly the size of my old iPhoto library. Any suggestion on how to find those original - probably hidden - files, so I can delete them?

    Thanks!

They're not there. That particular graphic you refer to (at About This Mac) is not reliable. Try rebuild your spotlight index, then see that what reports

I just tried that and all that came up was that I still only have 40 GB of free space. But how can that be considering that I deleted an entire iPhoto library, 80GB in size? I also deleted iPhoto itself and everything that belongs to it, emptied the trash etc. I'm quiet desperate here since I cannot transfer my Photos library back to my MacintoshHD from the external drive. When I try to copy it back I always get the error note stating that I don't have enough space on my harddrive, so the 80GB should still be somewhere out there, considering that I had 40 free GB before and after deleting the iPhoto library and sourcing it out to my external drive.

    I appreciate any help!

Disk utility tells you 120 Gigs

What does Grand Perspective tell you?

Well Grand Perspective tells me that I have 34 GB left and 87 GB of miscellaneous used space (that was roughly the size of my iPhoto library). So it seems then that I did not properly delete the library or rather that the original photos of the iPhoto library are still located somewhere on the drive. But how can I find them? I've tried searching for the photo names in spotlight, however without success. The same goes for locating them/ a respective section in GrandPerspective. Any further suggestions? the grey area is the miscellaneous used space, forgot to insert that screenshot above. the second biggest area in grandperspective is the green section and middle section which make up a total of 11GB and are from Parallels. So there is no other big photo section whatsoever...Screenshot at Dez. 10 18-14-12.png

    Those two did the trick:

    - sudo tmutil disablelocal

    - sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper

I now have enough space to copy my library back to my macbook for whatever reason...

    Thanks for the help!
