Q: Rear camera stopped working after upgrade to iOS 9

updated to iOS 9 on my iPhone 5.  once completed the rear (main) camera shows only a black screen.  the front facing camera seems to work fine.  other apps don't seem to be able to use the rear camera.  There is also a warning symbol when tapped declares the flash cannot be used because the iPhone is too hot.  My phone seems to be at room temperature.  Also the flashlight does not work.  I noticed the warning symbol doesn't appear (after a phone restart) until I switch to the front camera and back to the rear camera

This same issue seems to have appeared in iOS 8.4 updates from searching the forums here.

I have restored my phone and turned it off and on, but nothing has worked.

anyone?

thanks for any help.

Hello people, I had the same issue. My iPhone 5's rear camera suddenly stopped working. I think it happened after I dropped the phone once. I had recently installed iOS 9.1. I tried powering off the phone, hard reset etc. but nothing worked. Then, I pressed the front and back end of my phone around where my camera is, several times, and my camera has now started working back.

I had the exactly same issue on iPhone 5S after update on 9.0. Rear camera and flash dead. I was hoping that new firmware brings the fix, but it did not happen at all.. So today I have started playing with all advices here in this thread. First of all - hard restore - not succeed. Then reset, then toggling buttons for airplane and low battery mode. Still not succeed and I just lost my hope that it will be working again.

So I just left the iphone in airplane mode and left it laying on my desk like for 5 minutes and then voila - flash worked! But no rear camera ... Hmm, what now. Toggling buttons again, leaving phone in airplane mode for another 10 minutes - still rear camera dead. Turned on the airplane mode + low battery mode and I did reset of iPhone in those states and then voila - rear camera is back and working! Really don't understand, but after that all - Apple please don't tell me that it is hardware issue. Wondering if that solution is temporary or not.... will see.

Iphone 5s ios 9.2 rear camera and flashlight stopped working. Started again sometimes after rebooting. Worked for a week after resetting. Worked for a week after changing the camera. Now stopped completely. Sometimes message: "flash overheated". Sometimes flashlight button in cc greyed out. Rest of the phone running like it should. Apple chat support runs a diagnostic program that doesn't recognize the camera and cannot analyze it. Solution: recycle and buy an new or refurbished. Seems apple cannot fix their own gadgets.

My new iPhone 6s Plus did not take video on 1080 or 4K but sometimes would with 720. Apple were unable to diagnose the fault and ended up having to replace the phone. It had all the hallmarks of a software fault as the camera was working fine for photos and fine for 720 video when I could get it working.

it sounds like they have all sorts of problems.

They replaced my phone for a new handset and it works fine

now i bought a new android phone und moved my sim and since then camera und flashlight are working again. strange.

but what i wanted to say, it cannot be a solution to trash the iphone if the camera stopps working and buy a new one and -since it's not individual (there are a lot having that problem) and not even restricted to one (old) model (saw iphone 6 postings in this thread)- trash the new one to buy another, when the camera on the new one stopps working and so on.

OK, come around. i have things to say. My story begins like everybody else's but end much better

I had a iphone 5 more than 3 years old. i was still not thinking about changing it as long as it goes. Just in a nice day, I upgraded the phone to ios 9 and camera stopped working with same symptoms. also flash is not working and saying it is too hot and needs to cool down etc...

At that point, I start searching online and in that forum, I see many people having the same issue after upgrade. I enter my symptoms here too.

    Just to draw a bottom line;

    - Any kind of upgrade/ downgrade erase settings, toggling some settings, restarting etc is NOT fixing the issue, consistently.

    - IOS 9.2 is NOT fixing the issue.

    - Geniuses in genius bar is not fixing the issue. I am working in a support chain of tech company too. Those people are first line of support, they will tell you only whatever they are told. If upper level support doesn't accept that IOS 9 cause it, Geniuses will not accept that

    - Disconnecting/connecting camera DOES solves the issue in most cases.

I was thinking going to my local repair guy and get my phone opened up and disconnect the camera but I don't usually trust them so I was hesitating.

Than, something strange happened. I got a call from Apple support. they say they are calling me based on the forum post, in this very treat. they want to diagnose my phone. First I thought it might be someone trying to have my detail and rob me. but the number they were calling was legit and they remotely enable some diagnostic menu on my phone and let a diagnostic run for a while. They investigate the log and couple days later saying that they couldn't find the fault and they need my phone.

I sent my phone, and next day they call me and they say they want to keep my phone, so offer me a new phone and probably and upgrade to iphone 6. They say they will keep working on the issue. I of course accept and got my phone yesterday. It is not an iphone 6 but, hey, I cannot be upset with brand new iphone 5s

What is also interesting is that once they call me, the service flows continue just as you  expect from a perfect company. So i think this forum might be really powerful to get noticed by company and companies may not be as bad as our perception, maybe our perception is based on a fraction of our own experience.

im very happy for you !! BUT what about the rest of us ????? The phone was working fine until the update ..

if Appel thing I will buy a new iPhone as the update kind of kill the camera on my iPhone 5s they are wrong .. I will buy anew phone but defenetly not an iPhone.. And I will sale my other iPhone 6 as well .. As probably I will have the same problem after updateing it .. So ignoring the most of us ( without even 1 reply from Apple here) is not what will make us stay a loyal costumer..

Not sure which one solved the issue but having this problem since updating to ios 9.

I did this and now front camera is working

    1. close all apps

    2. shutdown and wait for 30 seconds

    3. while waiting, press the camera with a bit of pressure

    4. boot up

    Goodluck guys.

Persistent fix? I could bring my camera to work sometimes after a hardreset or even by waiting and testing again. But nothing fixed it permanently. Although dis/reconnecting the isight camera not.

Apple does not reply on this forum - ever. This is a user-to-user technical support forum. Only users reply here. If you want to talk with Apple, you'll have to call them directly.

Okay, you try to make a effor because i don't speak english, but I solve a lot of iPhones with the same problem

    .

IPhone in all conectors had a plate avoid connectors loose, except in the rear camera.

    Shut down your iPhone.

    Open it

Gently push the connector or loose and connect again

Without close the phone Shut on the phone and test the camera

if does not work loose and recconect again

    regards
