    It is not the release of the next gen product that causes discontinuation of repair service support for an older model.  It is age of the product.  This document has the details

    But to answer your question, 5th gen iPod is on the "obsolete" list.  However, if you do an Internet search, you can probably find non-Apple repair businesses in your area.  Something like replacing the battery would be a simple "10-minute" procedure for an experienced tech.
