Q: My Windows partition is not bootable after create a new partition

Hi all.

I'm using a Mac Air with El Captain 10.11.1

My bootcamp with Windows 10 was running ok, today i've created a new partition to extend windows partition.

It was made in Mac disk utiity.

After that windows is not bootable anymore.

Windows partition mount and work on Mac OS.

I have 3 partitions: Macintosh HD - Untitled - Windows.

Here are the output for some commands: (notice that windows partition is listed like disk 5)

You need to reboot first which will re-sequence the partitions to 4 5 instead of 5 6.  You 3 4 5 is no longer the same as 3 4 5 in the past due to the large Free Space section. Repost the DD command after the reboot/re-sequencing is complete.

Loner T, the output showed in the previous post was taken after reboot.

I think i've done something wrong...

    What i did was:

    1. Use Gdisk and in the main menu, use the 't' command and change partition 3 from 0700 to AB00.  done

    2. GPT4 when converted to Free Space, will return an error, because there is valid disk - disk0s4 to start with, but Free Space cannot be mounted as a disk. (i understood it like a explanation for action in number 1)

    3. How was GPT5 created? i don't know, i made something wrong

    4. Run the DD command for disk0s6. done - it is executed in gdisk right?  (should i rebooted before execute it?)

The Booter is 128MB. Was GParted tried to expand the partition at all?

no, it was used to try to merge 2 partitions, to do it i needed erase the new partition, the erase worked, but the resize has failed.

maybe i did something wrong in gdisk...

before, i only could see 3 partitions in disk utility: windows, mac hd and the new (untitled), now there are 4 partitions visible (plus the free space (not visible))

It is not related to Gdisk, which will not create new partitions. Can you post the output of (if the disks are still numbered 5 and 6...) the following commands?

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s5 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

    sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s6 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C

Erase disk0s5 (carefully) and convert it to Free Space. Reboot and check disk numbering. Once it looks proper, we can recreate the MBR and test Windows.

No. Please ensure disk0s5 is the correct disk pointing to the 134MB chunk. Gdisk just manipulates partition headers and boundaries, it cannot erase partitions.

Ok, but i can't manipulate it in disk utility, it shows in the Partition window, but not in main window where the command to erase is.

You will need to use the Terminal command. disk0s5 will disappear and you will see an error message that disk was not found. This is expected when you convert to Free Space.

    Loner T, you are incredible!

You are an expert and a gentleman, thank you very much for your help.

    It's working fine again.

Now, i will search a good tutorial to merge partitions in order not to do mistakes again. I think i will follow your suggestion to make a clone of my Windows and recover after merge partitions.

    Best regards

This link is for Vista, but the sam procedure should work for W7/W8/W10 as well. It is good idea to backup all your important files before you do this.
