Q: iTunes 12.3.1.23 video playback not working

I recently updates to OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 and iTunes 12.3.1.23 on my MacBook.  My iTunes will now play songs, but video playback for TV shows/movies I've purchased through the iTunes store is not working.  The video player remains black, and there is no sound.  The files have been downloaded to my MacBook, and are not playing through iCloud.  Thoughts or suggestions?

I've tried closing iTunes and restarting the computer.

MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), iTunes 12.3.1.23

I did just that and, indeed, problem solved. If it's a way for Apple to force us to upgrade to their new system, it's not very cool.

Although it is handy to know that moving to El Capitain fixes it, I have to agree that this is not a fix that Apple should rely on.  Yosemite is still in lifecycle support and I don't have time to do full OS upgrades (I use a lot of custom compilers etc for development work which all get nuked between OS updates) just to fix an iTunes issue which Apple themselves caused via an update!

You really need to look at what you are saying.  Upgrading the OS is not an adequate solution for all who have this symptom.

Another one here; all my Mac`s will now no longer play video since latest iTunes update, as for updating to 10.11 forget that as it breaks my workflow completey. Apple`s quality control of software release is nothing short of poor...

I was able to fix this by adding Google DNS setting to Network > Select Ethernet or Wi-Fi  > Advanced > DNS

    8.8.8.8

Take a screen shot first before adding.

For some reason, when you select + to add, it erases all settings. You will need to add them back. You can drag items in the list. I would put Google DNS at the bottom.

I gave this fix a shot, and it didn't work for me, but thank you for posting this I am saving this info in case I ever need to shift my DNS entries in the future, learn something new every day!

I spoke to Apple Care, and they suggested deleting and re-downloading a video file - didn't work.  They put me through to iTunes, and after waiting 45 minutes the first time and half an hour the second time without getting through, I haven't tried back.  I have no plans to risk further glitches by upgrading to El Capitan at this time.  I was VERY clear that I have paid for content that I cannot access through iTunes, MPlayer, QuickTime or VLC and that I am ****** off.  Apple Care understands that this is "frustrating".

    I have:

rebooted in safe mode (per support call)

rebooted in single user mode (fsck -fy)

    reset NVRAM

Tried installing and playing the movie in Quicktime Player 7

Tried plugging in an external monitor (I finally get a message about HDCP - which is what I would expect), tried to drag the movie to my laptop

(my hunch was iTunes thought there was an external monitor connected, or had lost it's mind in the HDCP realm).

    None of this works.

I too have 10.10.5 and installed the Sec. update last night. (20015-005).

This is particularly lamer since I'm overseas and downloaded a ton of movies to help pass the time zone difference and it's a work computer, so updating to the latest OS (is a lame suggesting to fix an app), and not possible with our Corporate policy.

I uninstalled latest iTunes (12.3.1.23) with AppCleaner, installed iTunes 12.3.0, then ran the OS X 10.10 full installer. This fixed iTunes. It may be worth while trying to run the 10.10 installer or 10.10.5 Combo update first and see what happens, that is my plan for my other Mac`s.

10.11.2 is useless to me in it`s current state, now with Apple breaking iTunes 12.3.1 their software if fast becoming a joke and wasting my time fixing what used to work without any issue...

Update: Running the 10.10.5 Yosemite full OS X installer fixed iTunes 12.3.1.23 paid video content now plays without issue, this is the simplest way I have found to fix this issue.

n.b. you will need to update Safari back up to 9.0.2

    Hi Queen6,

Does running the full installer change anything to existing preferences and user settings or will they still be the same. Will my programs still be there? I guess what I'm asking is: will that be like a new install ?

Yup. Spent hours trying to make it work. Can't find 12.3.0 anywhere. Apple please at least acknowledge the problem!

Just to add to the list another user.

Beyond a joke Apple - can't you get any release right these days? Suggest that you send your own folks back to the classroom and teach some coding.

(Apple Devotees - I know Apple aren't here. That's beacuse the amount of unhappy customers would frighten them)

Looks like an OSX reinstall is in order.
