Q: Finder won't quit or relaunch when shutting down

When I try to shutdown or restart (MacBook Pro Mid 2014, El Capitan 10.11.2) everything closes except Finder. It goes into "Application Not Responding" mode. It won't close or relaunch. I have to power button down. It has done this several times. Any clue what it could be. Here is the log for around the time of attempted shutdown.

You're running "Dropbox." Please disable Finder integration in its settings. Also open the Extensions pane in System Preferences (if you're running OS X 10.10 or later) and uncheck the box next to its name. See whether there's an improvement.

Thanks. After disabling Finder integration should my Dropbox folder no longer appear in Finder? It still appears and Finder still won't allow computer to shut down.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Both shut down fine. The second account I created and Safe Mode. I then re-tried my usual login and the same problem exists.

One of your login items may be causing the problem. Please select the Login Items tab in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences. Delete any items that could change the behavior of the Finder. If you're not sure which ones to delete, post the list, or a screenshot.

If a login item is grayed out and can't be deleted, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and enter your login password when prompted. Then try again.

To avoid confusion, note that checking or unchecking the box next to a login item does not inactivate it. You have to delete the item from the list.

I took everything off except iTunesHelper and SpeechSynthesisServer and it shutdown perfectly! I guess I'll add them in one at a time and see which it could have been. I'll be away from my computer until Monday but thanks so much for your help. I'll post what was causing it when I start adding things back in.

Please remove the worthless Sophos product by following the instructions on this page, and also this one, if applicable. If you have a different version, the procedure may be different. I have no opinion about the rest of those items.

Back up all data before making any changes. Never install any "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" software again.

Ha believe me I know. My industry requires antivirus on all computers used for business. Even Macs. It's a battle I got tired of fighting so I found Sophos and thought it would be an ok solution to appease them while hopefully not causing computer "issues". Thanks so much for your help.

Sophos is not OK. If you're required by a (mistaken) institutional policy to install some kind of AV, pick one of the free apps in the Mac App Store—nothing else.
