Q: Some glitches in El Capitan's 10.11.2 update

Since updating to 10.11.2 I've noticed two glitches, both concerning the trash. Sometimes, not always, I cannot remove an external drive by moving it to the trash because it tells me some file or application is in use, when it isn't. Same happens with a file, folder or e-mail attachment on the desktop of my SSD that I no longer need and want to trash. It tells me that file or folder is in use and cannot be trashed, when it is NOT in use. The only way to get rid of it is with a third-party application, Edenwaith's Permanent Eraser, which asks me if I really want to get rid of it and then promptly does just that. Anyone else have this problem?

OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), 16 GB Ram, 2.6 Intel quad core i7

    Hello Holger Jensen,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that sometimes you have difficulty emptying the trash on your Mac and receive errors or alerts. To begin the troubleshooting process, I would suggest reading over and working through the suggested steps located in the following article.

Thanks for the reply but it does not address the problem in question. The files I want to delete are not locked or otherwise in use. They are, for example, a NY Times crossword puzzle I've finished with or already printed. Or a mail attachment I've already viewed and no longer need. The problem persists on a daily basis . It has just happened again with a newspaper article someone sent me that I have already viewed. It also occurs when I try to unmount an external drive that includes my Time Machine backups. I see on this forum that many others have the same problem. So it's up to Apple to fix it or let's go back to Yosemite and wait for El Capitan to become less buggy.

Thank you Joe but Apple Support gives me a case number for a chat -- 1007764873 -- tells me my chat session will begin shortly, then remains forever blank. This may be because it also asked for the serial number of my computer which, of course, indicates that free tech support for my late 2012 mac mini expired long ago. The problem is, I do not need tech support for how to operate my computer, I need tech support to correct a glitch in the OSX 10.11.2 update that keeps telling me I cannot empty my trash or unmount an external drive because "the item is in use," when IT IS NOT.
