Q: Mask Radius Changes from Project to Compressor

I have created a shape mask on a Custom Solid Generator. I have changed the radius on the mask to the dimensions I want in the project. Playing the project in the timeline, etc., everything looks and plays according to my settings.

But when I send to compressor, the output looks like it goes back to the default settings on the mask -- the radius settings that I had opened up look like they are back to their smaller settings. Basically, the project is set up correctly, but when I send to compressor the mask radius settings from the project don't seem to carry through, and go back to default.

Anyone have any ideas?

I am working in Final Cut Pro X 10.2.2, Compressor 4.2.1, on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OSX Yosemite 10.10.5

Final Cut Pro X, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

I did a quick test and could not reproduce this. (My mac, OS and application versions are exactly the same, by the way)

What are the exact settings of your project and what are the compressor settings you are using for export?

Does exporting a master file directly work as it should? If it does, then a possible workaround (assuming you really need to go through Compressor) is to export a master file as ProRes 422 and bring that master to Compressor.

Thanks for testing on your system and your response.

    Per your question about settings:

Project Settings: 1080pHD, 1920x10 Resolution, 23.98p Rate, and Render Format Apple ProRes 422.

In Compressor, I have chosen to export at Apple ProRes 422 LT.

But I now think that the problem is in FCP X, and I found this out: when I go into Effects / Masks, I see that I can send 4 of the 5 masks to Motion (control click on the mask), but that that option is not enabled / won't work from within my FCP X for the "Shape Mask." So, what I think is that this particular mask (Shape Mask) and it's going back to its default settings when exporting is related to the same problem where it can't go to motion (for customizing a copy). It's possible this is a damaged installation on my part, but things are pretty new and I see that this problem has occurred in one or two other places as reported online in different forums.

I have worked around it (for now) by using the Draw Mask effect and re-creating my mask with the bezier tool. When I export, that mask retains the correct (adjusted) dimensions.

Also, per your last question (and I think putting the problem more squarely in FCP X and not in Compressor), exporting a master results in the same problem.

The fact that the problems shows when exporting a master file does indeed suggest that the issue is with FCP X and not Compressor.

I also do not have the ability to "Open a Copy in Motion" for Shape Mask, but for me the same is true for Draw Mask as well, whereas I can do it for the other 3 masks.

This same thing happened to me. I have a Gradient generator with three Image Masks to show video clips of different sizes. When I export to a Pro Res .mov file, all three Image Masks are smaller, though the X-Y dimension proportions have remained the same. Interestingly, the videos in the layers below have also made made proportionately smaller. I'll try using a Draw Mask as a workaround ...

Can you post us a screenshot, showing the timeline, the preview window and the Inspector with the Mask settings? Like that....

    and:

Shape & Draw can not be modified in Motion5, they contain 'stuff' you have to program (I would give an arm to use those ink-tool for my own Motion-effects!!)

Do you mean Image Mask or Shape Mask? Image Mask uses source image.

Similar problem here. In my case, I had a circular Shape Mask applied to a Gradient generator in FCP.

No Motion effects. No Compressor. Just built-in FCP mask and generator.

When I rendered out of FCP (settings didn't seem to matter), the Shape Mask radius changed.

Solution:  I fixed it by turning the generator + shape mask into a compound clip. Works fine now.

    Seems it's an FCP bug.
