Q: Magic Mouse and trackpad

I Just installed el captain and upon restart the magic moment mouse tracks spAsmodically and the track does not even connect. New batteries in each, different surfaces tested.

 

as a result I have no control of the mac.

 

very disappointed !

Try an SMC reset:

 

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support

 

If that doesn't work, use a USB mouse to delete both the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad from the Bluetooth preferences and then add them again.

 

You can also try a Safeboot to rule out anything third party from causing the issue. You can Safeboot by restarting the computer and holding the Shift key until you see an Apple and a progress bar.

    Nope. Didn't work. Won't launch in safe mode. Progress bar froze at about 50%.  Now I have to go and buy a mouse to try the other option. I thought Windows junk only had these issues.

    You could try resetting the NVRAM. This can resolve issue that may be related to the logic board such as bluetooth.

     

    How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

     

    If your computer can't Safeboot, there could be something bigger going on than just the bluetooth items.

    Try booting into OS Recovery. Hold down Command+R when you restart your computer. See if the Mouse/Trackpad works here. If it does, then there could be a user related issue as the OS Recovery is not tied to your user account at all.

     

    If the mouse works in the Recovery, I would recommend opening Disk Utility and running first aid on your hard drive. I usually do this before installing any OS upgrade to make sure the hard drive is good. If there is a problem, it could be preventing you from performing the SafeBoot.

     

    I would borrow a USB mouse from someone if you can. No need to go out and buy one unless you don't have any other choice.

    OK,  I didn't attempt the NVRAM reset as deleting them and re-pairing seemed to work.

     

    Track pad OK, but mouse not.  Scroll features work perfect but the pointer has a mind of it's own.

     

    Cleaned the optics etc and no change.  Could suggest that the mouse has failed ?

    Could be a problem with the mouse itself as you suggested.

    Check the back and make sure the battery case isn't bent. See if it slides on a flat surface without leaning or tilting.

     

    If your pointer is jumpy when you use a trackpad, Magic Trackpad, or Magic Mouse - Apple Support

     

    On suggestion is to use compressed air to clean the sensor but it seems you may have done that step. If this article doesn't help, may want to get the Magic Mouse checked out. It has the same warranty as your computer if it was purchased with the computer, otherwise I believe it is a 1 year warranty.
