Q: Apple Music plays wrong version of a song when playing an album

When I play certain albums – e.g. The White Stripes – “Elephant” or U2 – “The Joshua Tree” - certain songs are played in incorrect version (i.e. live, bootlegs etc). Other albums are played correctly. The versions played are taken from "My Music" which is connected to iTunes Match. It is only when I use Apple Music the problem occurs. When playing from My Music the songs are played correctly. Any idea what to do?

I'm in the same boat as you. I don't put "live" after song names anymore in my tagging because that's ridiculous when the album title is what tells you the context of which version of the song it is. I should be able to expect iTunes to consider all the Metadata when it scans my music.

And same as you, with too many mismatch situations like that to justify going and messing up my file names temporarily just for some frankly pathetic workaround. So basically the apple music matcher SHOULD work but it apparently doesn't as well as the iTunes Match one does? This seems to be what KGriff was failing to understand earlier in the thread right?

I'm going to wait for the update that fixes this. I have no problem deleting the icloud library and rescanning it once they fix it, but no way am I going to go and add garbage to my song tagging.

Just updated to iOS 9.2 and the problem persists.  What a Trainwreck.

Interestingly, when I play an apple music playlist via the "for you" section on my iPhone, it plays live cuts of the same songs (presumably) from my collection.  So it's not even streaming from Apples servers?

Makes no sense, such a shame Apple botched this so hard, very worrisome.

It appears the problem may be relegated mainly to live versions of songs.  Of which I have thousands...

Doing the update now (one iMac, one iPhone and two iPads). But I would not expect an update to correct existing problems - perhaps any songs that are added AFTER the update. I think to cure the existing mistakes you would have to either (1) delete the incorrectly matched songs and then add them back to ICML - hopefully or (2) possibly re-do your entire iCloud Music Library (hopefully not).

Nope - it also causes issues with alternative versions - like the type that record companies and artists have been adding to "deluxe editions" the past few years. But the mistake with live cuts makes it much more obvious.

So can anyone verify if this issue is fixed now? I assume I will have to delete my iCloud library and make it re-scan, but can anyone confirm if they fixed this or not?

I did not completely delete my iCloud Library. I had set it up initially with a part of my full library (23,000 out of about 50,000 tracks) and saw the issue. When they raised the limit, I deleted all of my tracks from my ICML (as opposed to the ones added from Apple Music) and then switched to my full iTunes Library. The mistakes - while less frequent - were still there. A few albums (live ones) I "tested" by deleting them and the music files and then re-adding them from a backup that I made before uploading my full library and in some cases they went perfectly, but in some others the mistakes were still there.

So while I don't think the issue has been completely eliminated (and I did get a nice email from one of two Senior Apple Techs that they know it an issue to be worked on), it has improved. Now whether completely starting with a fresh iCloud Music Library would help - can't answer. Not willing to waste the time until I am completely sure the problem has been solved.

I've done some testing today, and other than some album art weirdness the problem appears to be fixed. It looks like Apple fixed something with the scanner because all my weird live versions are playing the correct version after re-uploading. I'm trying to find out how to delete just my icloud music library now so I don't have to actually delete from itunes and lose my play counts and stuff. After I do that it should just be a matter of re-scanning and re-uploading to fix everything.

Here is where I run into another issue. I was going to use the following method to clear my icloud library https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204964

The problem is that this method is for iTunes 12.2, and apparently in 12.3 they took away the reset button that it tells you to click in Step 3.3. I'm probably going to talk to Apple support about it unless someone else knows how this works in 12.3.

Well, last night - granted without doing the reset (which BTW is still there in the latest version of iTunes on my iMac - all the way at the bottom), I (1) deleted an album that had shown duplicate songs when I added my full iTunes library and (2) added a John Lennon album that I never had in my iTunes library - a collection of outtakes and both of them still had the mis-matching issues when I tried playing them on my iPhone after adding them to iCloud Music Library.

So while they have improved their matching logarithm - and again, I did not try a full reset because I am not sure if I will have to remember and re-add the music I added from Apple Music - I think the issue is still there.

One of these days - or when I get an answer to what the iCloud Library actually remembers from the Senior Apple Tech I have been talking to - I might try the reset route just to satisfy myself that they actually fixed the issue.

replying to original message - apple music - pathway may be the problem as it may be using a partial match by name - versus your itunes - where you are choosing exactly which song you want to play.   Its like looking up extremely common names - you can get many matches.

Could you take a screenshot of how yours looks? All the way at the bottom of what? I am using Windows but I can't believe they would remove a button on the windows version and leave it in on the mac version.

Have not had the Windows version installed, but you have to sign into your Apple ID account and go to the Account Info page. It is at the bottom - at least on the OS X version.

Yeah I just checked and in iTunes 12.3.1.23 for Windows, that button is not there on my account page. I have the reset all warnings for buying and downloading but not the reset icloud music library button.

This issue is still popping up for me months after cancelling Apple Music.  It's really destroyed a lot about how i listened to music in the past and what i choose to have on my phone.  I used to have so many concerts on there but now its useless and frustrating.  Just yesterday i was listening to a concert from 2006 and right when it was about to come to a historic speech before a song.. it played the studio version instead.  I listened to that show to get to the speech.  I wanted to throw my phone onto the sidewalk.  I've been paying for iTunes Match for years and my collection is in tatters.

Well, I'm not sure what to do now. I have hundreds of playlists on my iMAC, with songs I ripped from my 6,000 CD collection. Some of them I want to play on my iPhone. I got a new iPhone 6S, and signed up to Apple Music. There didn't seem to be any way to put any of my own iMac playlists on the iPhone. It said I had to upload my library to the cloud. After 2 hours or so, it was about 1/4 done, when I tried playing some of the playlists that started appearing on my iPhone. What a mess. I had playlists that collected my favorite live versions of Grateful Dead songs from various CDs, but it was playing the studio versions of the songs instead. I don't have iTunes match selected. It is completely worthless. I stopped the cloud transfer. What do I have to do to just copy a few playlists from my iMac to my iPhone, and get the right song versions?
