Q: Advice.  Need iPod device to send music to Airport Express.

HI.  I have a Ipod (2nd Generation) that we used to as a remote music controller.  It sent signal to airport express that played speakers connected to amp.  However it is no longer compatible with the airport express device.

I want to get a used or new iPod type device that WILL be compatible with airport express.  I am confused as to which devices are compatible.  Please help.

iPod touch, iOS 4.2, also iPhone 3G

    Hello davidtony,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

From you post, it sounds like you were using your iPod touch (2nd generation) to control your AirPort Express.

From what I gather, your AirPort Express may be running Airport utility 1.3.4 for iOS or 1.3.3 for iOS. If this is the case, you would need an iOS device that could either run iOS 7.1 or later or iOS 6 or later respectively. The following article includes this information.

AirPort Utility software and firmware downloads - Apple Support

You currently have an iPod touch (2nd generation) that is only capable of upgrading to iOS 4.2.1 which is not compatible and you would like to know which iOS devices are compatible. I have broken down this information for you below.

iOS devices capable or running iOS 6 or later:

        iPhone 3GS or later

iPod touch (4th generation) or later

        iPad 2 or later

iOS devices capable of running iOS 7.1 or later:

        iPhone 4 or later

iPod touch (5th generation) or later

        iPad 2 or later

    Cheers!

Pedro….thank you SO much for your response.  That is really helpful.  How can I tell what software by Airport Express is running.  All I can find is that firmware is 7.6.1

Pedro….oh I get it…the IOS needs to be 6 or 7.  It is for my teenager.  I would prefer he not have access to the internet.  What is best way to disable internet.  Is it to turn off Safari and enable restrictions with password?

    Hi again davidtony,

After looking at your follow-up questions, which were really good by the way, I realized that I may have misunderstood your question.

It sounds like you are having an issue in one of the two following scenarios.

    Scenario 1:

The music being played is stored on your iPod touch (2nd generation) and you are playing that music via AirPlay on the device through the speakers connected to your AirPort Express, but this is no longer working as expected. If this is correct, I would first suggest reading over and working through the information in the following article to troubleshoot AirPlay.

Get help with AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

    Scenario 2:

The music being playing is stored in your computer’s iTunes library and is being played from there to the speaker using AirPlay, but you are using the Remote app on the iPod touch to control that music. If your situation matches this scenario, you may need to get the latest compatible version of Remote to control your iTunes library.

To get the latest version of Remote on your iPod touch, first delete the app from your iPod and then continue to follow the iOS steps outlined in the following article.

    1. Open the App Store or Mac App Store.
    2. Go to the Purchased screen on your iOS device or the Purchases tab on your Mac.
    3. Find the app and choose Download. You'll see a message telling you if a compatible version is available. Tap Confirm to install this version.

Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support

If the above scenarios and suggestions don’t help you resolve this situation, please reply and let us know. You mentioned an incompatibility. Are you receiving an alert or error message? What seems to be incompatible? Also, please provide in your reply the current version of iTunes and version of Mac OS X you are using.

    Have a great day!
