Q: MacBook to TV via HDMI trouble

I'm trying to connect my MacBook to my Pioneer TV set via a media centre.

I've got a HDMI and connecter thing. I've plugged into the back of the box. My MacBook didn't 'identify' the connection, and the desktop display didn't appear on the TV display. I was following instructions from macworld.co.uk, and it mentioned when you open system preferences for the display two windows should pop open, one for the macbook's display and one for the TV's. This didn't happen when I had the cables connected on both ends. But I accidentally pulled a cable from the media centre, which caused the power to go out. When this happened a second window opened on the MacBook for the TV, but as soon as the TV was switched back on the second window disappeared.

Thank you, I have a macbook (2006-2010)

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

There are two possibilities. The Macbook is seeing the media center and not the TV. Or you need to go into settings on the TV and configure it to what input you are using. My TV has HDMI one and two. If I don't set it to the right one I get no picture.
