Q: El Capitan Frozen After Sleep

I have an early 2015 Macbook Pro that I recently upgraded to El Capitan.  It wakes from sleep fine when it has been closed for a short amount of time, but if it is in sleep, say overnight, when it wakes, the keyboard and mouse are unresponsive.  This leads me to having to restart my computer daily now.  Does anyone know any fixes for this? Thank you.

As I mentioned before, for me upgrading from VMWare Fusion 6 to VMWare Fusion 8 solved the issue.

Those of you that have this problem while running VMWare should also make sure to check the checkbox in your VMWare virtual machine settings under Advanced => "Pass power status to VM".

There are numerous threads over at VMWare Support Community about this issue so make sure to check those threads for solutions.

Some people have seen log entries related to vmware worker processes crashing (usually due to excessive requests) which is why this thread is generally leaning in that direction. In my case, typically, if I don't leave vmware running overnight then my MBP wakes up fine. Having said that, I did have a hard lock up yesterday whilst actually using the MBP, without vmware.

Some people have reported issues / resolutions around removing errant unused hardware devices, possibly bluetooth related.

My suspicion therefore, other than the mid-day hang which may be unrelated, is it's actually something closer to the 'wake from sleep' entries. Something somewhere (be it vmware, bluetooth peripheral, some other energy management thing) is interfering with wake from sleep... but that's unsubstantiated at the moment.

The Apple support rep who contacted me (who, sadly, has now gone rather quiet) got me to create a sys diagnosis using the following shortcut:

    shift + ctrl + opt + cmd + .

This creates a .tar.gz file in a tmp location. I've not got as far as inspecting the contents to see what's in it. (The main issue I have with this is that when the machine has frozen then it's not actually possible to create this report until the machine has been hard rebooted.)

Thanks for this. I have tried it and it does create a tgz with a bunch of diag data in it; I am hopeful that this will work when my Mac Pro freezes up per usual tomorrow morning:

I tried the procedure documented by weirdbeardmt but it didn't make a diag tgz file with the SBBOD like it did when I tried it ad hoc at the cmd line. I'm guessing that window manager or some similar system level process is looping, has a lock, or some such mutex situation that prevents using the keyboard or the mouse. Oddly enough though, today for the first time in about two weeks I didn't have a SBBOD. Don't know why, but I did recall making sure Safari wasn't running as usual when i stopped using my MP for the day. Not sure of what I did or didn't do differently from all the other days, but I'll try to figure it out.

This is what seems to have fixed it for me. Just recently my 2015 MBP started freezing after a long sleep, every time. I did this 3 days ago and it hasn't froze from sleep since (actually hibernate, the MacIssues article explains). I'm confident that Apple will fix this issue and when they do, I will reverse this, but in the meantime - problem solved.

I got this from MacIssues (http://www.macissues.com/2015/05/08/how-to-fix-your-mac-not-waking-from-sleep/)

Enter the two commands below into a terminal session. You will get a semi-confusing/scary warning message before you continue, but I went ahead with it anyway. You can reverse it by typing in the same commands with 1 instead of 0.

    sudo pmset standby 0

    sudo pmset autopoweroff 0

The article didn't address the warning message. It was written before El Capitan, but I've never had this problem until just last week. I've been running El Capitan from the first day of release, and Yosemite before that.

I'll reply back if it seems to stop working or other issues result, but so far so good. Thanks MacIssues!

OK so after upgrading to VMWare 7.1.3 I thought the problem had resolved but I've just had two mornings in a row where the computer is locked with the SBBOD.

I'll try the solution posted by Chad32 above and report back.

To follow up on my last post I disabled system hibernation via these commands:

    sudo pmset standby 0

    sudo pmset autopoweroff 0

Unfortunately this morning my computer was frozen again.

I should point out that my issue is that the computer is not dead.  If I press a key, the system does wake from sleep and shows me the login page.  Also, I can see an icon showing my new emails so I suspect the system is actually still running in the background.  My problem is that the system will not respond to touchpad input or keypresses.  With no way to login, I am forced to reboot the computer.

Snap. My issue is exactly this.

As per the earlier part of this thread, I've found that by sleeping VMs before shutting the lid, it is usually alive in the morning.

I've not yet got as far as upgrading to Fusion latest as I feel aggrieved to have to pay out for something like this. But if a patch for 7.1.x doesn't come soon, I may just bite the bullet.

    Hi,

We all know that this is a VMware compatibility issue with Macbook pro El Capitan.

This being said, I previously mentioned that upgrading from VMware Fusion 7.1.2 to 7.1.3 fixed the problem.

I was WRONG. The problem came back. After a few hours with VMWare customer support, they told me to upgrade with VMware fusion 8. They gave me a mere 15% off VMware (in addition to the 40% black friday discount). Also, for those who bought Fusion 7 between July and September, 2015,  they will upgrade it for FREE.

I officially confirm that the problem is gone, for a week now. (Leaving vmware on and closing the lid does not lock the keyboard anymore).

Hopefully, this will solves everyone's problem. Unfortunately, if you don't want to pay, they don't plan to fix Fusion 7...

    Hope this helps.

I'm running El Capitan 10.11.1, MBP retina 2015, and have been updating all releases when available. I think the problem has to do with the OS X than anything else. It had been working great but recently in the past 2-3 weeks I have been having the same issues. I don't run VM Ware but Virtual Box (Free and its AWESOME for running windows 7).  Even when VB is "off" and not running and without any programs/apps opened and the printer is turned off, bluetooth turned off, it still hangs (spinning rainbow circle) whenever I press a key to wake from an overnight "sleep". Short naps I have no problems waking up. Deep slumber, it hangs. It's got to be the OS since no other program is running in the background.

I wish some Apple tech would moderate some of these forums like Microsoft does with their forums.

They do, to some extent - someone from Apple contacted me based on my involvement in this thread.

I've not heard anything from them in a while, though.

I've got a 15 inch MacBook Pro (mid-2015) - 2.8GHz i7 - basically a brand new machine. Came with El Capitan (now 10.11.1), didn't migrate apps from my last MBP, just installed everything fresh and copied over some folders w/ data. When leaving the machine on overnight (lid open, Mac drops into sleep mode) the Mac will not wake - this happens 1-2 times per week. It will slowly display a login but the KB is unresponsive. Mouse pointer moves but is not clickable.

If I wait around long enough (usually 5-10 minutes) I start seeing notifications about email pop up. I've even tried typing in my PW at the login screen even though it was unresponsive and a few minutes later the astericks appear in the PW area, but it can take another 5 minutes. Even then, the machine is unusable and I have just power the MBP down and restart from scratch - a full reboot.

My MBP is connected to an Elgato Thuderbolt expansion hub with a Magic Trackpad 2, an MS Ergo KB and a Dell 4K display running max res. I run the displays side by side to have as much real estate as possible.

Reading through this thread I upgraded my copy of VM Ware from 6.X to the latest 8.1, though I normally don't have it loaded (and in fact it wasn't running on my most recent lockups) - I doubt this was the cause but upgraded nonetheless.

I run Time Machine and it's backing up to a NAS based array (Synology device on network). The lockups MAY have been happening when TM was trying to perform backups. Looking through the logs via console I'm seeing quite a few messages indicating things were starting to go bad. Some selected events leading up to attempting to wake the machine:

Having been developing on Macs exclusively for the past 8 years with zero issues like this, it's a bit disconcerting.

I'm running El Capitan 10.11.1, MBP retina 2015 and running virtual box. My guess is that OS X does not work well with virtualization software or something. I even changed the settings using local login versus icloud verification and all failed. I even have automatic login, etc.

So this is what I had done so far. Clean install of El Capitan erasing everything. (I was so happy I made a USB install of El Capitan because I bricked the mac somehow when I formatted the hard drive and it would not install wirelessly, kept keeping some error message. Used the USB install method and recoved!!!)

Reinstall Virtualbox 5.0.10. At first it didn't hang after returning from sleep but after the second day it started having the same issue again. I removed VB 5.0.10 using the uninstall tool from VB. Reinstalled an earlier version that I did not have any problems with v5.0.6 and now no more problems. However, before I installed v5.0.6 I had install the new update for El Capitan to 10.11.2 (though on the release note there was no mention of login/sleep issues).

Now my MBP runs overnight with VB running in the background doing video tasks etc and so far for the past 3 days with constantly on, I have not had any problems when waking the mac from sleep. This is what worked for me. I have no clue about VM ware or other software but I know with VB at least the prior, not the newer version, worked flawlessly.

So, for days now I've been trying to isolate this problem. But before I go on with that I've discovered, I must say that since 10.11.2 came out, the SBBOB has not occurred again; perhaps others can add to this observation to the contrary if it is still occurring on their MB/MBP (note again, I am running a 6 core, 32GB RAM, 1 TB SSD Mac Pro WITH 5 attached discs (USB3 and Thunderbolt)).

But, before 10.11.2, here is what I tried and discovered: again, I was just trying to isolate the problem while hopefully keeping it from occurring (albeit, I can recover in about 3 mins). My suspicion (gut feeling) was that it was somehow related to Window Manager or some other process that was holding a lock, whatever, at the system level).

    1. Shut off daily put Mac to sleep at midnight, wake up at 5:30 AM. (un-ticked start/stop boxes)

    STILL OCCURS

    2. Stop putting discs to sleep when possible. (un-ticked box in settings)

    STILL OCCURS

    3. Shut off putting monitor to sleep after 30 mins (set to never).

    STILL OCCURS

    4. Turned off screen saver (set to never).

    STOPPED OCCURRING

I don’t know if the last one was “it” or if it was just that I was no longer involving a “sleep” event of sorts that was triggering behaviour in Window Manager somehow, but it did stop the SBBOD. I did one morning get a successful shift-control-option-command-period tgz file but have not as yet examined its contents.

But, now I’ve put everything back to “normal” with no SBBOD since 10.11.2.  (By put it “back to normal” I reversed in order the four steps above).
