Q: Screen sharing w/ Yosemite not working

Hi all,

I am trying to do Screen sharing from Yosemite MBP to Yosemite MBP and it will not let us. We are both logged in and texting etc. but even when we ask the person to share their screen and they say allow - nothing happens....

It used to work...

Teamviewer works fine...

Q: Any way to get this working?

Is it a bug?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

    Hi,

I had not checked the Contextual Menu and you are right it appears there.

One method of connection in the the post was to highlight the Buddy then use the Buddies menu rather than the Contextual one or the icons at the bottom of the Buddy List.

Somebody somewhere has not been keeping all their eyes on all the balls.

Actually, I was just able to connect to my mother's computer and take over her screen. It did it via the ScreenSharing.app which launched once she granted access. So maybe we are on the other side. Also of note, she is still on 10.10.x while I was on 10.11.

    Hi,

Yes both Yosemite and El Capitan in the Messages App can invoke the Screen Sharing app to iMessages contacts.

Is there another means of taking control of someone's screen other than using the now-unworkable AIM screen-sharing connection?  I do remote support for octogenarians and the fact that the AIM sharing connection has been broken is a real problem.  All I see on Apple's info is screen sharing within a LAN, which is not very helpful in my situation.

    This is very frustrating!

    Thanks,

    Hi,

The Screen Sharing App (the bit that Shares Screens on Bonjour computers) can be invoked form Yosemite's version of Messages (and above)

It does require that the other end also has Yosemite or above.

Then you needs to enable the Screen Sharing App by going to System Preferences > Sharing > Screen Sharing and setting it to Anyone.

I am sure the same setting has to be on fro  the Bonjour option listed above).

Then in Messages you have to start an iMessage conversation and then use the Details item top right (which offers three icons)

Two invoke FaceTime the third  of Interlocking rectangles starts up the screen sharing app and uses the connection info from Messages to connect (much like the AIM/Jabber ways does).

    There is another way.

It needs a more manual approach.

In an AIM Screen Share and the Screen Sharing app method from iMessages uses a VNC connection to transmit the "pic".

IN the Finder go to the Go Menu and select Go to Server.

Enter VNC:// and then an IP on your LAN to test (As in vnc://192.168.0.255 for example)

This will then try to connect to the computer at that IP and may ask you to enter a Password for an Account on that computer.

Obviously your Router  and the people you help get Public IPs on their Modems or the Routers behind them.

You would have to enter the Public IP.

The bit that make the Router send the info to their computer is Port Forwarding.

This means setting up port 5900 on their Router to point specifically to the IP of their computer on their LAN

Obviously there are other apps that do the same things as Messages (should) and as simply.
