Q: Photos sync'd to iPhone from iTunes all messed up in iOS 8.1

Hello,

I use an iPhone 5S with iOS 8.1. I sync photos from my mac via iTunes to my phone. They are separate folders and all was well in iOS 7. But in iOS 8, 8.0.1, 8.0.2 and 8.1, I have been experiencing many duplicates of the photos that I have sync'd in different folders. Not only does it create duplicates of the same folders twice but also messes up with the photos and they appear random in different folders. For instance I am syncing Folders A,B and C. After the camera roll I get Folder A, Folder B, and Folder C followed by Recently Deleted album and then Again starts with Folder A which contains photos randomly from the other two folders B and C. Likewise Folders B and C also have random photos from the other two albums respectively. I have no problems with the camera roll and the recently deleted folders. I was wondering if any of you guys have the same problem and found a fix to it.

I have removed all the photos from the phone and deleted the iPod Photo cache from my mac and sync'd the photos again. After the sync the gallery looks fine but after sometime or maybe i didnt notice much, after a restart. These duplicate folders start to crop up.

I clean installed my iOS 8.1 from iTunes.

Cheers,

M.

    Same problem here.

It started with ios8, the famous "deleted" folder all over the place, never in the same place in the middle of the albums.

An iphone 5S, I also have many photos and the folders ended up duplicated with photos inside randomly messed up, parrallel to the normal organisation.

Photo counter not taking into account the duplication.

I thought is was because my memory was limited, I had a 64Go and with all photo & music, I had less than 10Go available.

Countless calls to Apple, no clue, no help and no post on the forum I thought I was alone...

So I bought a 6 with 128Go and... during a few months it was ok but the last 2 or 3 updates... messed up photos again.

Only way is to resync, all but one folder containing only 1 photo otherwise it doesn't go.

Then resync all photos and be stressed for that it doesn't happen again.

I actually waited a few days for this update as I was affraid...

I have a similar issue with music, wrong dates or album photos, so album orders wrong when you listen to them...

So I put a space after the name of each bands and Apple Music lets me alone because it doesn't recognise them and don't mess all my music up.

Thing is... I don't have all the new info that are nice when Apple Music works well...

We don't buy Apple for this kind of thing... yesterday new adverstisement of Apple on TV "because we do phone and software it works perfectly"...

    I don't think so...

    Same issue

Once I sync again with itunes it gets fixed. Then it comes back after a few days.

It might be some app that is accessing photos and messing it up. If some of you with few apps on your iphone could list them then maybe we can see which one is in common.

I have 250 apps so might be too many to list.

I have only those Apps asking for access to photo : DayOne, MemoPad, PostitPlus, ScannerPro, Snapseed, Waze, Whatsapp.

I didn't give access to Photo to Waze & Whatsapp.

Last time I had the issue corresponded to last iOS update + instal of MemoPad creating a folder in photo (folder called memo).

This is an interesting remark because maybe ScannerPro has an influence as it is also bugging when making update and loosing icloud stored scans...

But as far as I recal, the event that started it all was the photo update in iOS8 and the creation of the panorama & recently deleted folders.

At the beginning, those 2 were floating all over the place in my folders.

Now they stabilised at the top but regularly I have a mess happening, usually when updating iOS.

So yes interesting idea but for me the root is in iOS Photo and the link to APps maybe.

Why is Apple doing nothing ?

Here we go iOs 9... all good, photos not messed up after updates... I do a screen shot of something and guess what... photos messed up ;-)

So I don't think it's an app but purely photo that has a bug.

    So please Apple, investigate this.

iOS 9.01, then iOS 9.02... same thing, photo folders doubled up after upgrade.

1 list like I have it on my computer, another list of same folders but photo messed up inside.

    In between updates no issue.

    I just realised something...

I have a folder that I called "2000000 Pellicule" (=Film in french & I name all my folders starting with YYYYMMDD so they order themselves and want this one on top, in which I put film photo that I want to keep separate but not indefinitelly ike other).

I am starting to wonder if this is not creating the issue and iOS is bugged because it has a "Film" iOS standard folder and see another one with the same name and gets troubled...

    2 reason for that.

I still have my old 5S and it doesn't have this "20000000 Film" folder but similar apps & quantity of photos than my 6.

It didn't get the issue at iOS 9 and 9.01.

But it was getting it all along when I used it for me and had the famous "20000000 Film" folder...

I just noticed now on my 6 that all foders have a doubled ghost copy, in which photos are in a messed up order.

But the "20000000 Film" folder... is not doubled !!!!

At least I noticed this time.

So I just renamed it with a name different to any of the standad folders of photo app.

And I will see next update. I will also update the 5S this week and see if the update creates not issues and let you know.

The problem emerged as soon as I updated to ios9 and the latest iTunes:

everything syncs fine: music, podcasts , videos, books
    all except photos:

    I've tried :
    1. de-selecting [ ] Sync Photos, then re-selecting again [✓] Sync Photos
    2. deleting the Photo Cache
    3. REBOOT
    4. HARD RESET, RESTORE (each reset-restore session would take me 4-5 hours; and i've been doing this a dozen times straight for the entire two weeks)

    5. re-named source photo folder, re-select

and I still get the following issues:

Total amount of photos will never be synced 100%, most of the time it's 50% synced, and whatever that DOES get synced- either ends up having folders and photos duplicated.
And why would it be saying 0 photos? When I open an album, there are photos in it - except that it's all scrambled up. Look, call me OCD but I really want my oregano to be in the oregano jar, thyme in thyme , and rosemary in rosemary.
    12112789_10153616912113798_1827092999_o.jpg

And if things aren't duplicated, I'd get the original amount of folders (as set-up in my computer), whatever that was synced will be in their respectable folders, and I'd get empty folders as if it's never been synced what-so-ever.

    IMG_4833.PNG

I've tried numerous times doing the whole 'selected folder' thing and I'd end up with the duplicate-issue.

Not to mention that the Photos app is always in "Syncing..." mode, which bugs the **** out of me because this appears even when my device's unplugged.

It has never been a disc space/device space issue as I have successfully synced 24k photos into my iPod without much of a hassle (granted,it's never been 100% synced, but majority of my photos; 95% of it is, so I'm rather alright)

I've tried downsizing the amount of images synced, 24k -> 18k , seeing how iTunes would only sync 18k/24k photos before 'finishing sync' all of a sudden. So I thought, maybe 18k's the 'safe' amount to upload as the ios hasn't been optimized to be able to sync more than that: so I synced 18k or so, only to find out I've only managed to sync 6k photos in total.

I've concluded that no matter what amount: be it just 20 photos, something will 'disrupt' your sync session and you'd probably be getting 5 photos instead.

ios7 was great- no issues. ios8 started making it buggy for me, I am now using ios 9.0.2 and the problem is even bigger than the predecessors. What the **** is going on Apple?!

It may take several more sync's to clear this up.  The other thing you can do is clear out the cache file for the photos.  This won't erase the photos but during the next sync, will rebuild the files and clean them up.  It will basically unload all of them from your phone and then have to re-load them.

I did have similar issues but not that often.

And when the duplication thing happens to me I found that best is to sync only my first photo folder containing only 1 photo.

Looks ike it's easier for the iphone itunes relationship than erasing all or syncing on a messed up situation.

Then I sync without photo (uncheck photo tab syncing) so they all are deleted clean and then check again sync all photo and sync.

Maybe quicker than clearing the cache file, I have 19k photo it takes nearly 12h to rebuild, but I agree it may be bugged.

Do you have a photo folder that bears the same nale as some of the standard apple folders like "deleted" or "roll"...

It looks to me it could be the issue that it buggs the thing to see it's own folder and a synced one with same proprietary name...

Still happening on 9.1, for anyone who was hoping that the new update would actually solve this issue. It also appears to randomly delete photos that I have sorted into individual folders on the fly on my phone, as well as entire folders synced from my PC. As someone who has a ton of photos and references them all the time for Facebook, in conversation, etc., this is incredibly frustrating. Please fix soon, Apple!

I am not sure whether this has worked yet or not. But so far so good.

I am syncing folders on my Mac to the iPhone. I did the following to try to fix it:

    1. Removed all photos in my iphone from itunes

    2. Deleted ipod photo cache

    3. Created a new folder "Pics" in the main folder list on finder

    4. Moved the folders that I'd like to sync to the iPhone to "Pics". (I used only a few folders)

    5. Synced the "Pics" folder to itunes after clicking "All folders"

I also removed access to photos on my iphone to all apps except Whatsapp (do this under privacy). As and when other apps are asking for access I'm giving it. If it pops up again after a particular app maybe that is to blame.

I'll keep you posted if the issue pops up again.

I have spoken to Apple twice on this problem. Both times I am told to simply restore. It happens on my iPhone and iPad every single time there is an ios update. Absolutely ridiculous they haven't sorted this yet. Ive just updated to 9.2 and its done it again.

I also have this problem on my iPhone 6s and on my iPad Air (IOS 9.3.1), and I have experienced this problem for a long time, since IOS 8 or 7 even. Every time there is an update, Apple is messing up all my photos. I get duplicate folders. Photos ends up in folders they originally did not belong in. It is a completely mess every time I update IOS. That Apple has not fixed this yet makes me believe that they do not give a **** about it. Or they are incompetent and does not know what they are doing. Or maybe both. I have given up on Apple/iPhone because this has turned into a joke.

OP is from Oct 29, 2014 , here I am in Apr 13 2016, still have the same issue. Photos is out of order, with multiple albums with all pictures all over the place.

I usually have to delete and resync.  The kicker is that I'm using a macbook pro 13" to sync it with itunes; it did not have this problem when I was using a Windows PC itunes to sync!

It's probably one of those rare but apple can't replicate the bug, a very annoying one too.

I am a Level 5 ASC contributor and lord and behold, I have been having the same issue since the fall of 2014 when iOS 8.x was first released. I am going to explain the problem in detail and also the steps that have been taken to try to resolve, all to no avail.

Like the OP I had no issues with iOS 7. Starting in late 2014 and with every single iOS update since, the folders I have synced from my computer to my iPad get duplicated during the iOS update process. To explain, before an update I have Camera Roll, Recently Deleted, and 2 folders containing photos that I have synced from my computer via iTunes to my iPad (let's call them albums A and B). Immediately after an iOS update I end up with Camera Roll, Recently Deleted (both unchanged), the original albums A & B (generally unchanged), and extra/junk copies of albums A & B containing random photos from A & B. Sometimes I get one extra of each album, sometimes several extras. This has happened with every single iOS update since the fall of 2014. Once these junk albums appear they cannot be deleted from the iPad directly as they are coded as synced albums. The junk albums contain pointers (not actual photos) and the only way to delete them is to first delete the iPod Photo Cache on the computer, then doing a sync with no photos selected (this clears all photos except Camera Roll), then doing a new sync with albums A & B. The Photos App remains well after that until the next iOS update when the issue reappears without fail. So with every single iOS update in the last 18 months, after updating iOS I have had to clear all synced photos and then re-sync the ones I want. The extra junk albums show up regardless of whether the update is done over the air or through iTunes and regardless of whether I have one album or more than one. If I have one album only, it gets duplicated, sometimes once, sometimes multiple times but it is always duplicated after each iOS update.

I first contacted AppleCare about this issue in December 2014 and have had an open case with them ever since. I have spoken with a highly experienced Level 2 tech more times than I can count and the issue has been escalated to Engineering on several occasions, all to no avail. To summarize past steps, my iPad has been restored several times, both from backup and also as new to make sure no corruption was being restored back. All Apps have been re-downloaded and settings re-configured from scratch. My iPad was replaced by AppleCare to eliminate the possibility of a hardware issue. Potential metadata issues were suspected so I downloaded a 3rd party program to my computer and stripped the photos in question of all metadata. No metadata remains in these photos. I have synced different photos. I have replaced my main computer (original W7, new one W10). I have a fresh install of iTunes (12.3.3). None of the photos are 3rd party, i.e., they were all taken by me with a selection of cameras and there is no discernible pattern as to why they are duplicated. I also should point out that I keep a different synced album on my iPhone and the same issue has occurred there. It is not as repeatable as with the iPad. During some updates the album on the iPhone is left untouched but with other iOS updates the same duplication issue occurs (same photos, no change in album content).

This thread is one of several I have encountered in the ASC describing this issue and at this point I have two options, to live with the issue and re-sync photos following every single iOS update (what I have been doing) or delete all synced photos from the iPad permanently.

I will be emailing AppleCare again and linking this thread.
