Q: Mac OSX v 10.6.8 and iPhone iOS 9.1

Since iOS 9.1 is not compatible with the version of iTunes I have, what is the best OSX upgrade that will not only be compatible with my phone but will work well with a 2009 iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core Duo, 500Gb HD with 320Gb available and 4GB ram?

El Capitan has many issues I have read about. I would rather download 10.7 or 10.8. Which of these has the least amount of compatibility issues?

Thank you for your time.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 500GB H.D.,3.06GHz Intel,4GB DDR3

My suggestion is to go with El Capitan and ignore the gloom & doom messages about it. The vast majority of those who are having problems with El Capitan have loaded questionable third party software on their Mac and that is causing their problems.

By the way I have had no problems on either of my Macs nor have the users I help to support.

If you are still uneasy about El Capitan, download and install it on an external disk drive and test drive it first.

Of course your first step is to backup everything just in case.

    Mr. Truffles,

Your iMac is more than capable to run El Capitan.

IMHO the most important consideration is application compatibility. http://roaringapps.com/apps?index=a should give you an opportunity to explore your options.

I have no problems with El Capitan. You might want to add some RAM. The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.

I use a backup/clone application called CarbonCopyClone (bombich.com, $40).  I use it regular backups, but in your case you can clone your existing system to the external disk (per Allan Eckert) and upgrade that external clone while your internal drive stays safe.

Thank you Steve, I have a Mercury Elite 3TB that I use with Time Machine via Firewire. Can this be used with Carbon Copy?

If it can, after I clone my internal disk, download El Capitain to the external disc, then what? How can I know if everything in the external drive is compatible if nothing has changed on the internal drive?

    Thank You

    You are welcome.

Can this be used with Carbon Copy?

    Yes,

See Ferd II's link to check foe compatibility.

    Dear Allan,

Thank you for your reply. I would have given it a "helpful" but was not allowed to.

I am a true novice in dealing with the iMac. How do I effectively "install it on an external disk drive and test drive it first."?  I have a Mercury Elite 3TB that I use with Time Machine via Firewire. If I use Carbon Copy 3.75 (since I have OX 10.6.8) to clone my internal drive then download El Capitain to the external drive how do I test drive it?

    Thanks

    Gentlemen,

Thanks for all of you putting up with me. I am a bit thick in the skull.

I think I just answered my own question to Allan and Steve.

I clone my internal drive as it is to the external drive.  Download ElCapitan to my internal drive and test it. If I have any difficulties I restore my internal drive with the cloned drive. Right?

    I have another question.

On my 3TB external drive I have my time machine back-ups which just in case the clone does not work I could use as another back up. When using disk utility and Carbon Copy to clone my internal drive, is it possible to partition  the External drive  to give the clone of my internal drive it's own space?

    Thanks again.

I would get another new drive to make the clone, then upgrade that external clone.  If anything goes wrong with El Capitan, you can dump that failed-test image and try again with internal still safe.

Another reason to get a new drive for your migration/test ... I strongly advise against mixing test-bases and critical backups on the same physical media.  When attempting corrections to "play spaces" the OSX could *just maybe* kill the backup.

    Dear Support Team,

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. Unfortunately at this time I cannot afford another new drive.

If I clone my internal drive as it is to the external drive.  Download ElCapitan to my internal drive and test it. If I have any difficulties I restore my internal drive with the cloned drive. Would this method work or am I asking for trouble?

I would strongly recommend against doing that.

If you can't afford a new disk drive then don't do the upgrade and live with the problem until you can afford it.

    Thank you Allan,

In the future when I can afford a new drive, how would I connect it to my iMac? Please spell it out for me.
