Q: iTunes won't open after updating to 12.3.1

Hi I have OSX 10.11.1 running and I updated my iTunes to 12.3.1. Now all I get is the spinning beach ball when i try to start iTunes. I did a force quit and rebooted but the same thing is happening. I have a huge music library so I thought maybe it was doing some kind of update by after a half hour iTunes is still got the spinning beach ball. Any help would be appreciated.

On my Macs with iTunes 11.4, all is well, if maybe a tad sluggish. On the one Mac running El Capitan and 12.3.0, working but insanely slow. (12.3.1 was totally non-functional, but the fixes in this post using Terminal saved the day and got me back to 12.3.0)

One short term solution - just use iTunes for file management. For day to day playback, use Swinsian. It's unbelievably snappy, and you can have it scan the iTunes library on startup so it's always synced. Automatic bit rate switching as well.

During my numerous attempts to cope with all this mess I started iTunes 12.3.1 with a new library - and everything was fine.

I managed also to import my songs and movies into iTunes and everything was still fine.

However, what I had not with this, were my playlists - the fruit of many years of hard work.

So, lastly, I reverted to 12.3.0.

The teachings are clear: iTunes 12.3.1 has problems to work with libraries and playlists.

    Good luck,

I see that Apple released iTunes 12.3.2 today.  Has anyone tried to see if it resolves this problem?  Thanks.

Great!  Macs Pain - were you running 12.3.1 and experiencing the slow down and 12.3.2 made things better?

Yes, 12.3.1 was not usable, downgrade to 12.3 worked.

12.3.2 runs smoother than 12.3 on my iMac.

Hi all, just to update that downgrade to 12.3.0.44 or lower did not work for me ...My problem seems a bit different, it will Start to do Volume check even when it was unchecked. After Downgrade it still crashes even on 12.2 (downloaded from Apple). I tried to use Time Machine to go back to the time it was stable but after a long process the Apple Logo hangs - I am dis-illusion about the stability of Apple :-( this is my first Mac coming from Windows and was hoping it would be more stable.

Had to go to Apple Store to re-install to El Capitan 10.11 and iTunes 12.3.0.44 which still crashes on Volume check but at least this time when I uncheck Sound Check it did not crash. So Sound Check is still an issue. Could someone confirm if you have similar issues with Sound Check and if iTunes 12.3.2 resolves it. I am hanging on to my current versions - once bitten, twice shy.

Hope this will help someone too. Side topic, if you are relying just on Time Machine, don't - now I have SupderDuper as safety net.

I was so excited by the prospect of a new version that I stayed up till the middle of the night to install it . Now I too would say that iTunes 12.3.2 has solved the serious problems that the previous version had. The first start after the update was still slow but later starts were much quicker (down to under 2 minutes now). I can use the program again. Yippee!

But you win some, you lose some - a problem has arisen which wasn't there in previous versions. When I define new Playlists within a Playlist Folder (which is how my iTunes Library is structured), the new Playlists are appended after the last existing Playlist, e.g. as has happened to the last 7 Playlists here...Screen Shot 2015-12-12 at 12.41.25 iTunes Playlist sorting.png

In previous versions the Playlists where sorted into alphabetical order "on the run". With the current version the Playlists do appear in the expected place alphabetically when the program is restarted, so I don't see this as a problem worthy of its own thread. I'll report it via Feedback and hope it will be corrected in a future version.

Well I decided to try the new update 12.3.2 and am very happy with it. Adding music to my library and editing the playlists is now a lot faster then even 12.3 was.

Thank you Apple for making iTunes respond the way it should.

12.3.2 is the first iTunes I can use since 11.4. Approx 115,000 tracks. Thousand of playlists. I can now sync the iPhone 6S.

Don't want to tempt fate, but I think this nightmare may be over. I can summon the beachball back for a few seconds by switching from Music to Movies, or scrolling quickly, but it seems to last only for a few seconds even then - clicking between tracks etc is very responsive. Not perfect but I can live with it. Thank you Apple - keep improving it, would love to see you make it officially "snappy". And how about automatic bitrate switching while you're at it.

Add me to the list of folks that 12.3.2 fixes the problems that caused me to roll back to 12.3.

    Finally!

Much appreciate everyone's update that 12.3.2 is better than 12.3 but has anyone tested Sound Check? The reason it crash on my system was because one of my device had Sound Check turn on and once turned on in 12.3.1, anything I did to turn it off did not work and iTunes crashes to never return :-(

Currently have re-installed OS and iTunes 12.3.0.44 with Sound Check turned off and working. So would be interested to know if 12.3.2 resolves it. Thanks again everyone :-) much appreciate everyone's input.

What is Sound Check? I haven't come across that. Is it an iTunes command (I couldn't find it). Or is it a separate app?
