Q: Auto- Brightness Operation

I have a Snugg Silicone cover for my iPad Air 2.  When I put it on my iPad and the "Auto-Brightness" control is in auto, the screen goes to minimum brightness. To return the screen to normal viewing levels, I must put the control in manual to adjust it. I guess I do not understand how the brightness sensor works. It seems to me that if you cover the sensor with something that opaque the result should be the opposite of what I experience. The Snugg sleeve is black so it should block any light from reaching the sensor if it is positioned over it. Can someone explain how the iPad sensor works and where it is located. I have been able to find very little information on how it operates.
