Q: Contacts Search Freeze - iOS 9

We have several iPhones (6) with the new iOS 9 installed. The Contacts app freezes during a search query. Just installed the latest upgrade yesterday, but issue still exists. Any thoughts appreciated.

Try to reset your device. This won't delete your data stored on this device.

    • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
    • Press and hold on the Home button
    • Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.

Alternatively, you may go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Settings

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201559

If this does not help, restore your device to factory settings. Note that this will erase the data from your device.

Take a look this Apple Support article: Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support.

The search bar on the top doesn't work with two letters: F and M. The app is freezing.

    rebooting didn't help.

The letters at the side to get all contacts beginning with F or M works.

It is a pity that there is no direct way to tell to apple support, and no review function in apple tunes. After waiting for 15 min  at the phone I stopped the query.

Nothing will help at this point. Why? because I got a brand new phone, downloaded my contacts from iCloud and have been dealing with this very issue for three weeks now. Its not going away until a future iCloud/iPhone update. Very frustrated as well but I've been on escalation support calls and they fee helpless at this point.

Tried all of these options: 1) hard reset (done by Apple store rep), 2) resetting default settings (Done by Apple store rep) and 3) factory resetting the device (at home as instructed by Apple store rep). After the factory restore, I immediately logged into iCloud and tried the search in contacts... still freezes!! Contacts will only work if you scroll through the entire list to find the contact you are looking for, however if you want to do a search for a contact, it freezes as soon as you tap the search option.

Also, the default calendar for iOS 9 has issues. When you go to the month view, you cannot select any day and see the events on that day.  The calendar will not show any other events other than the 'actual' days events.

I cannot believe Apple is not addressing this issue with their update fixes. As much money that is paid for these phones, you would think they would push out fixes as quickly as possible without having to wait an entire year for another iOS.

Same issue here.  Brand new IPhone 6s  Running IOS 9.1 and as soon as I try to type anything into the search bar in contacts it freezes.  REBOOTING DOES NOT WORK, RESETTING DOES NOT WORK.  So either everyone here received a lemon phone or this is a code problem.

Guess I have to wait it out till 9.2.

    Come on Apple!

Until the next software release, try this. Use spotlight search instead of trying to search contacts. However, disable spotlight search on everything first. SETTINGS, GENERAL, SPOTLIGHT SEARCH - TURN EVERYTHING OFF. Then wait 60 seconds and turn on only "CONTACTS" Allow a few hours for re-index of all of your contacts and that should help for now until the next IOS release.

    Thunderzzz,

I was so relieved to have find this post because I'm having the same issue as many others ( freezing contacts). The difference with me is that I've been able to determine, along with some help from my company's tech people ( and the local Apple store genius bar), this Freezing issue is due to a bug in iOS 9 and higher. This error does not occur in phones with iOS 8.4.   All of the issues you mentioned previously, about needing to set-brand up the phone as new from the factory have all been tried. I even took the phone into the Apple store near my home in Naperville, IL I was helped over a period of about 2 hours time by the manager and his top Tech at the genius bar - Sarah Ng.   They wiped my new 6S Plus ( 128) several times and even gave me a new phone. Of course all the phones had 9.0 or higher and they all duplicated the error.  While at the apple store they pulled out a demo phone they had in the back( that has iOS 8.4 on it) and loaded my profile into it. Voila !!  No freezing of the contacts.  Then, they updated the iOS on the demo phone to 9.1 and the phone's contact app stopped working like before. THIS IS DEFINITELY A BUG IN IOS 9 AND HIGHER.  Interesting, the stock email app and iMessage search my contacts directory just fine...it's only the contacts app that will freeze. The tech support team at my company is in the middle of sending me out a new phone with 8.4 on it. Once I receive the phone and swap my phone number on it I'll be returning my "frozen" phone   to them. they will then pull the logs from the phone and send them to me. I can then forward to you or someone else you'd recommend.  lastly, the only unique thing about my contacts that set me apart from most users are the following:  1) I have over 900 contacts and i add about 10 per week.  2) I utilize the notes field of each contact and have many paragraphs of info in each contact's notes field.  (But that shouldn't break the app?). Someone's got to contact Apple engineers in California and have them fix this... A$1,000 phone that wont search the contacts??  Unbelievable !!

Use the Spotlight Search feature (Drag down from the middle of the Home screen and type what you're looking for.) until a fix for this comes out. I've seen other odd contact list searching issues and it seems to be something that might need to be fix in an upcoming update, but spotlight works in the mean time!

Everyone on this thread:  TELL APPLE -- the more people that complain, the higher bugs get prioritized.  Most people don't bother.  If we bother, this bug will get fixed.  If we don't, it might not.

My husband and I have had the same problem on our iphone 6's with ios 9.1.   Just installed the 9.2 update and crossed my fingers.  Alas, no change.  ARGHH!   Thanks for the spotlight idea!

After many hours trying to find a solution to this bizarre problem, your simple, temporary, solution saved the day! Very much appreciated. Hopefully, 9.2 will solve the problem.
