Q: with 10.11.2, Mac Pro 2013 will not wake up 4k displays after sleep like before.

I have installed 10.11.2 today and found the Mac Pro will not wake up the 4k displays connected to thunderbolt ports. I tried many kinds of 4k displays including u28e590d, u24e590d, p2716q etc, but none of them would wake up after sleep. the only resolution is to unplug and replug the thunderbolt (display port) cable to a different thunderbolt port.

those displays all work perfectly with 10.11 and 10.11.1.

Steps to Reproduce:

1: have a Mac Pro 2013, any configurations and install 10.11.2

2: plug a 4k display like u28e590d to thunderbolt port using mini-displayport cable.

3: let the Mac Pro go sleep

4: when press a key or click the mouse, the Mac Pro will wake up but the 4k display will not wake up.

anyone is experiencing the same problem?

I just went through my usual cycle of doing a PRAM reset and temporarily lost all my Thunderbolt peripherals (including both ethernet ports of course) until I went through the SMC reset procedure.

Intel just released new thunderbolt code for the PC side of the business. Maybe 10.11.2 has some interesting new Intel updates?

I still cannot recover my Asus 4K monitor from sleep and am having trouble getting anything on the logs.

    Any other ideas?

Just fyi, system.log is in /private/var/log/system.log

Can always cat that to another file.

    tail -f /private/var/log/system.log -f ~/system.log

Have the terminal active when you sleep, then come back. then hit ctrl-c. That should save a copy of your log.

I have filed a bug report and contacted their technical support team.

I suggest all users who experience this problem file a bug report and contact Apple technical support team, this will definitely draw their attention.

Hi Cody G, sorry I reversed my OSX to 10.11.1 via Time Machine as I need the computer for my work.

sometimes all tricks won't work and I need to force the MP to reboot and some files are unsaved... so I think we need to ask Apple to provide a fix.

Mac Pro is pricy and we buy it for professional use, such a bug is critical, almost render the MP useless.

Sorry Cody_G no luck with the logs as yet. I am back at work now (it's Monday morning in Australia) so I will try again tonight after work.

    This seems to work reliably.

System Preferences > Displays > Arrangements > Check Mirror Displays > Uncheck Mirror Displays

I imagine someone could make a terminal script or automator action that does the same thing for easy execution.

And Yes I am filing a bug report.

    This seems to work reliably.

System Preferences > Displays > Arrangements > Check Mirror Displays > Uncheck Mirror Displays

Assuming you have a non-4k display also hooked up to the Mac Pro, I can see how it would.

But, for those of us that only have the one 4k display attached, the "Arrangements" tab is not visible.

Exactly the same problem here.... since installing 10.11.2 my Mac Pro 2013 with 2x 4K Displays (Samsung U32D970Q) don`t wake up from sleep...just black display. Only rebooting or playing with the thunderbolt cables (plugin into different ports) helps sometimes... This is REALLY annoying.

I am also having the same issue with an Acer B286HK 4K display.  I have tried all the possible fixes mentioned on this and other posts.  Only rebooting or playing with the thunderbolt cables work (and this only works once for each BUS).  I agree with the annoying part.  I usually wait to upgrade to the new OS X until July to avoid this type of problem, but I didn't this year.

Could you possibly file a bug report? Apple might provide a fix in next update 10.11.3

I am having the same problem after the update to 10.11.2 using two LG 31MU97 displays.  Had no issues waking from sleep before the update, but I did have an issue where only one monitor would display the desktop after a restart (turning the monitor on and off worked).  Now both monitors display the desktop when I first power-up, but they do not display a desktop/login screen after waking from sleep.

When I press a key on the keyboard when the computer is sleeping, the computer wakes up and then sends a signal for the monitors to power up, but the desktop is not displayed.  If I try several times and press the enter key I can usually get the desktop/login screen to display.  In any case this is very annoying.

Reset the SMC, PRAM, switched thunderbolt ports, etc.  None of which appears to be a long term solution.

    Submitted bug report 23894727.

This used to happen sporadically on older versions of OS X, but now happens on EVERY wake up.

Unplugging the monitor and plugging it into a different Thunderbolt port eventually wakes it up. Sometimes this works after the first time, but sometimes it takes 3 or 4 tries.
