    report same.

we just have to accept that fixing Mail isn't a priority for Apple - fixing stuff that makes money appears to be their priority.

You meant installed iOS from scratch, not OSX, correct?  If you set up the iPad as a new device my understanding is the mail app should have created a new database so yours seems to be the $64,000 question!

Then the returning messages in Trash must come from somewhere outside. Are you sure that all Trash mailboxes on the servers of all your accounts are empty? Anything set for Mail to use iCloud?

Unless I see this email atrocity fixed in good time they won't be making any more money out of me.

Neither will they be making money out of my family members.

..... my Brother who runs his own company has just bought 16 tablets for his reps to use. Initially he was considering iPad Pro's but guess what?

He needed his email to work properly.

    That's right apple, that's business.

    Hallo andreasfromgladbeck,

    Andreas

    Hello and good morning,

I have not had such problems . Can I somehow do not understand . If you decide to delete all messages and these also are no longer on the server , then you should not suddenly reappear on the iPhone or iPad as well. That sounds more like , as if there's data on the mail server of your provider . Is this definitely ruled out ? It's also only about a POP3 account and not to IMAP accounts .

Get your message Send times in the German forum and hear what the users are saying here .

    Greeting,
    Andreas

I've got a different problem after upgrade to iOS 9.2. The mail app cannot open attachments in the email I received after upgrade to iOS 9.2.

Since upgrading to 9.0 when it first came out, I was occasionally experiencing "message not downloaded from server" on the one POP map account on my iPad Air, but never on my iPhone 6, or for IMAP accounts on either device. Since upgrading to iOS 9.2, I'm now experiencing "message not downloaded from server" with almost all new email in the POP account on the iPad, but not on the iPhone. I don't understand how Apple can leave their users with unusable email accounts for several months with no acknowledgement of the problem and a "fix" that, at least in my case, has not resolved the problem and even made it worse.

    @ Ronald P. Regensburg / @ andreasfrom gladbeck - many thanks

server has no data on it, I've checked several times, knowing there's no data there.

to prove it... download mail to Inbox - check Trash folder is empty - turned network off - leave device alone for a while - go back to Inbox - Trash All messages - open Trash folder.... Guess What?... all messages ever deleted on iPad are back.

Database is broken - even after several fresh installs of IOS - that's either faulty hardware or **** coding! Let's see, I'm sure it's just a matter of timebefore someone reports same issue. And that would mean...?

Thanks to all for advice, comments and patience.

Sorry, yes, IOS. Issues with OSX too, so my small brain got confused.

After several installs of IOS means either faulty hardware or **** coding. Hopefully, someone else will report same issue before too long and help convince me I ain't crazy.

    cheers

After your last post to Ronald P Regensburg it looks like you've narrowed down the possibilities. Unless it's faulty hardware it is very odd that no one else has reported encountering this problem.  Again sorry you are having to endure this degree of hassle and time consumption.

    Cheers, appreciate the empathy.

I've now set the iPad up as new 12 times, both via wifi and via iTunes. I put no data on it other than 1 email account. I've used different email accounts. I haven't tried it with an IMAP account, only POP.

Always the same result: as soon as I delete more than 5 messages or use Trash All, the Trash folder restores any messages ever handled by the iPad.

    Here's the test:

    - newly setup email account (POP) receives several messages

    - delete 1 message > this creates the Trash folder

    - delete message from Trash folder > Trash folder is empty

    - turn off wifi and turn on airplane mode (just to be certain, although not nessecary)

    - back to Inbox, hightlight a few messages or Trash All > Inbox is empty

    - Open Trash folder > it displays messages just deleted AS WELL AS the previously deleted message(s)

Senior Tech advisor has passed it on to some other team and I have another call scheduled tomorrow. Meanwhile iPad is back to its primary function as Paperweight.

I'm bored now and if I actually go back to using it, will just delete mails one at a time. However, it's dented my confidence even further.... if it's restoring data that appears to the user to be deleted, but is still lurking somewhere, that could potentially prove embarrassing, potentially even dangerous.

    ___________

Additionally during the testing I also noticed the following 3 scenarios:

(iPad is in portrait view so it displays the message as well as the Mailbox entries)

Message 1 = Preview displays… Test Message 7- “this message has no content”. Whilst the actual message displays …“not downloaded from server”

Message 2 = Both preview and the actual message displays ...Test Message 8- ”this message has no content" (this would be consider normal behaviour)

Message 3 = Preview is blank - just email heading, but actual message displays ...“not downloaded from server”

These 3 scenarios have occured multiple times during the hundreds of test messages. I would guess around 25%+ of total messages are affected.

Probably will be my final post until such time that issue is resolved. Thanks to all for support.

Question remains: Why is it only me? Is it only me?

Wondering whether Apple has asked you to send any of the log files from the Library.  When I first opened a case the Senior Tech Advisor walked me thru a procedure involving extraction of selected logs from the Library which were sent to Apple for submission to Engineering.  If that hasn't happened address that when you next speak with the advisor.  Good luck!!

They have and I do have the Capture Data tool they utilise. However, these extracts contain an awful lot of information that I'm not willing to share without good reason, therefore they need to be specific about which ones they require, otherwise they won't get any. I can't say that I'm inclined to assist them to be honest.

But, thanks for the pointer anyway.

    Cheers

I was asked to send limited data.  My mail issue was on an iPhone 4S which is not synced to my laptop.  The tech while on the phone with me directed me on copying the logs on to the laptop after which I extracted selected those logs associated with the phone, zipped and sent them to Apple.  The good reason you are looking for might be to provide engineering with the key to diagnose whatever is causing this.  The problem you cite so far seems distinct to your device so you may want to reconsider that.  As before, good luck.

I had email's in POP accounts on iPhone 5S and iPad Air 2 which survived the early iOS 9 issues (the emails were dated March 2015). Since iOS 9.2 those emails are still accessible on the iPhone, but no longer on the iPad; I now see the dreaded message about content not downloaded from server.
