If I understand correctly, you updated a book and now it will not open. Is this happening with other books? I would recommend you read this article, it may be able to help troubleshoot the issue.

I will report the problem to Apple.

I contacted iTunes support who told me to do the usual, delete restart re download all of which I had already done, which didn't work. Now it is suggested to call Apple Support. In that the book is on all my other devices I have not pursued the problem further for now, but I may have too in that my OCD won't let it go.
