The above Link should go over how to resolve this from happening. It is possible you were listening to a song or radio station that was not locally stored on the device.
With Apple music you have the option to listen to a streamed version of the music as to not boggle down devices with excess space.
On Your iPad
- In the Music app, find the item that you want to download.
- Tap the More Options icon
to the right of the song, album, or playlist name. - Tap Download.
Songs and albums appear under My Music > Library. Playlists appear under My Music > Playlists.
It may have been something more basic however, Force closure of the application or a simple iPad restart may also assist in preventing this from affecting your experience.
