Dec 14, 2015 9:31 PM in response to sunflowers02by LarryHN,Define obsolete
iPhoto 9.6.1 works great but will never be updated so someday an OS upgrade will cause it to quit working - so if you never upgrade your OS it iPhoto will never quit working so to me it will not be obsolete
Of the other hand Photos is mostly better than iPhoto so why not go ahead and learn it?

Dec 14, 2015 9:43 PM in response to LarryHNby sunflowers02,Thanks LarryHN,
Perfect response and the obsolete definition makes sense to me.
I guess biting the bullet and moving to Photos will be better for me in the long run.
Do you know the process for moving to Photos? I backed up using Time Machine prior to upgrading to El Capitan. Do I simply sign up / open Photos and my images are there?

Dec 14, 2015 9:48 PM in response to sunflowers02by Niel,You open Photos; it’ll normally create a copy of the iPhoto library in the newer format. If for some reason it doesn’t do so automatically, launch it with the Option key held down, click on Other Library, and choose the iPhoto one.

Dec 14, 2015 10:03 PM in response to sunflowers02by LarryHN,When you open Photos for the first time it migrates your last used iPhoto library to Photos - this article describes how the migration operates - How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support
And you can migrate any iPhoto library to Photos by simply dragging it to the Photos icon in the Dock
and it uses very little additional space because - Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support

If your iPhoto Library should be on an external drive, make sure, that the drive is locally mounted and the file system is MacOS Extended (Journaled). Otherwise the migration may not be possible on that drive, because Photos needs to be able to create hard links on that drive as described in: Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support.
Don't uninstall iPhoto after you migrated to Photos. Both applications can work concurrently.
