Dec 15, 2015 10:21 AM in response to Val2013by Demo,They can read your text messages if the app is turned on and you are signed in. If you sign out of messages, they would have to sign in with your Apple ID and password in order to turn messages on again.

Dec 15, 2015 10:54 AM in response to Demoby Val2013,Thank you! I can't remember if I had signed out of messages. I know I had not logged into my ipad and messages or my text messages for many days, and I forgot my ipad somewhere and I believe someone got into my text messages. So, if the app is open and someome gets your device they can just click on the app and read your texts without have to actually login in w the password, even after your device has been inactive for a couple of days. So, as long as the app still be open even if the device is locked they can still read your texts??

IF the device is locked with a passcode, they would not be able to do anything unless they knew the passcode and could unlock it. If the device is unlocked and you didn't sign out of messages, yes they can read your texts. Even if the app isn't open when they pick up the device, they could launch the app and read you messages.
