Q: iPhone 6 - iTunes Problem

When I plug in my iPhone 6 to my computer and go to iTunes I get the following error message:

The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes.

This is a brand new iPhone which should have the latest version of iTunes, but just in case I updated to the latest iOS 8 to make sure there wasn't a problem there.

When I try to download iTunes onto the iPhone 6 I get a message saying that iTunes is already loaded on the phone.

So, how do I download my song library on my new iPhone 6?

Thank you.

12.1.2 is not the latest version... 12.3.1 is.

I have this same problem!  I downloaded the "latest version" of iTunes on my PC, 12.1.2.  and I downloaded the latest version of iTunes on my iPhone6, iOS9.  Now I cannot transfer any of my playlists to my iPhone.  Instead, I continually get the message that I need the newest version of iTunes.  When I check in both places, I get the message that I aleady have the latest version of iTunes on each, my PC and my iPhone.  This is a cruel joke.

How do I get 12.1.3?  I downloaded 12.1.2 from iTunes less than 1 hour ago.  It keeps telling me that I have the latest version of iTunes and will not retrieve another version of iTunes.

What version of Windows are you using. For the latest versions of Windows (7-10), iTunes v12.3.1 is the latest version. For XP & Vista, the latest version is v12.1.3. If you need the XP or Vista version, then see this ASU User provided tip sheet, go to the Older Versions section and select iTunes v12.1.3 dated September 16, 2015 for XP & Vista. Install it. Hi! Sorry to just join in on this post but I'm struggling too. I've got OS X 10.7.5 on my Mac Pro with iTunes 12.2.2.25 . My iPhone 6s is iOS 9.1. When I try to sync my phone with my macbook, it says "the iPhone "iPhone" cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes" but everytime I try download, it tells me I already have the latest version......? I just updated my OS X and that is also the latest version I could download....? Any help at all will be appreciated x

Your problem is a little different. You are using OS X, and you do not have a version of OS X that is able to run the necessary version of iTunes. You will have to see about upgrades to your OS X. I'm not a Mac user, so I suggest you create a new thread with the question on how to handle your problem.

Thank you to all for your comments.  As a reminder:  I kept getting the message on my pc and on my iPhone6 that I already had the latest version of iTunes and I had 12.1.2 on my pc and iOS9 on my iPhone. The result was that I could not move playlists from my pc to my iPhone.

KiltedTime said that the problem is with my pc. I solved my problem by using my pc, going to the iTunes website (www.iTunes.com) and downloading 12.3.1.  That did the trick!  Now all is well.  Thank you KiltedTim -- you have renewed my faith in humanity!

The error message is useless and uses poor grammar.

Another iTunes fail in proper and clear user interface. Microsoft would have done better than that and they don't even TRY!

Checking the HELP tab in iTunes then clicking Check For Updates triggers a search assuring me that "iTunes 12.1.2 is the current version". IT IS NOT.

If you cannot trust the program itself and it's mothership server to identify an update what does that say about the development and support team?

    Another programming fail.

Few software programs in modern times are as tone def to intuitive usability and common sense as iTunes. Not even Facebook can hold a candle to the incompetence and cumbersomeness of iTunes programming.

Actually, the only time you will see this "error" is if you are using an outdated OS on the computer for Mac, or if you are using XP or Vista in Windows, or you had used a special download of iTunes in the past, such as that designed for older video cards and it will misidentify iTunes updates in the future, and that is identified on the iTunes website. I teach Windows at the local community college, and if you think that Microsoft "would have done better....", then you are not that in tune with Microsoft and Windows. Believe me, they can thoroughly mess things up within their own ecosystem, let alone trying to work with other systems. Just a note of information.

Sorry Professor Chrisj - you're not quite right. I am getting this misleading "iTines is up to date" on Windows 7 with iTines 12.1. This is after getting "iPhone cannot be used with this version of iTunes." This is a Catch 22: It says I must update, but it also says I am up to date at the same time. So now it's just plain broken.

Which one of my posts are you referring to? If you are referring to one above, then that is in relation to a Mac computer, not Windows. Windows iTunes update problems are addressed in an ASC User provided tip. This is the best consolidation of information for iTunes and Windows. Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.  Scan that document for help. Windows can show errors for updates, many times when using the iTunes for older video cards installation. You should be able to update after reading through turingtest2's information.

I was replying to your post that said I'd have trouble on Windows XP or Vista. I have Windows 7, and I had the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I've bookmarked that page for future reference. I found the fix by reading all postings to this thread. The fix is to IGNORE the message in iTunes that it is up-to-date, and go to itunes.com and download the latest version there. The itunes.com download page won't let you download with Firefox, bit it worked OK with Internet Explorer. It should be reported as a bug if iTunes says it is up-to-date, when it is not.

I am now successfully updated and iTunes talks to iOS 9.2 on my iPhone OK.

I buy a new iphone 6 and rush home in excitement to use it but spend the next hour on the internet trying to fix a problem that should not exist and that is that my iTunes tells me on my computer that I have the latest version 12.1.2 in fact the latest version is 12.3.2 but it took me AGES to read through forums and find the fix (thank you lovely people) now is iTunes going to reimburse me for the hour I lost fixing an error they have? No did it take the shine of my new phone? My oath it did .................all I did was googled iTunes pretended i didn't have iTunes installed, installed it and plugged my phone back into computer and all is fine and the new phone is now setting up, although I am now pipped off and cranky, yes flying tomato it should be reported as a bug

Okay so I am having a similar issue...

New I phone 6s, trying to restore from Itunes and get my contacts on the new phone. Running osx 10.6.8, Itunes 11.4. Still getting the same error message when I try to connect the phone, "The iPhone “iPhone” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. Go to www.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes.

    Am I missing something?
