Q: nsurlsessiond - taking up all bandwidth!! Help ?

Ever since updating to OSX yosemite, the process "nsurlsessiond" has been taking up my whole bandwidth for the past 2 days...downloaded almost 5GB of data so far!!

 

I read on some forums that it could be due to icoulddrive, but my icloud is OFF and it literally has nothing in it...

 

Please help! How do i stop it ?

    I unchecked App Store preferences... Automatically Check for Update, download newly available updates... and Install System Files

    and the "Downloading" stopped right away, it's gone! Screen Shot 2015-12-11 at 8.07.24 AM.png...

    I want to thanks everybody for their Input, I literally just bump up this thread from the dead and getting many useful response. Below are a few update.

     

    It try Recovery from the System, and also creating a new user. It seems both attempt suggest as long as I log into my iCloud account, it will start downloading. So both solution dont work.

     

    Thx to the suggestion of iCloud files failed to Sync, ( It will have a Cloud icon on your Finder, look up for a few post above ) I took a look and there WERE NOT any file with that icon. Both on All My files and on iCloud Drive. However I did notice 8 Strange file, a few of them are Infinity Blade 2 saves, which weight less then 100KB each. and a few are Kakotalk Log file which weight in few MB each. In total they weighted less then 10MB. And my top download speed are 900KB/s. That means I would have to redownload them like a millions times over and over......

     

    I deleted them, and the downloading immediately stopped, I thought I have fixed it, but I am highly suspicious those are not the culprit due to the file size I mentioned above.

     

    Today I saw nsurlsessiond downloading again, I wait for a few minutes and it stopped. Since I had taken lots of Picture I was giving it sometimes to sync. I opened Photos and turns out all picture were there already. So this is all good.

     

    However after a few hours nsurlsessiond was downloading at full throttle again. At first it was downloading from Apple CDN ( actually it is CDN from Akamai), I think that is ok, anything from CDN are likely not something on your iCloud, but rather likely to be Software Update, Apple Music, Apps Update etc.

    However I watched the Data went over 3GB and didn't slow down, again I had no idea what it was downloading. I updated the latest El Capitan when it came out as well as the Recover Image. So i should not have any more update.


    And later in the hour, nsurlseesiond was, again downloading from Amazon AWS S3.

    ( Which I am pretty angry as a shareholder because Apple has so far still fail to make enough Datacenter and keep the storage on their bill, instead they continue to use third party storage like Amazon S3 and Microsoft Azure )

     

    So basically, the problem is still not solved, and Apple has fail to acknowledge the problem. A quick search on Google and Twitter will see lots of angry users. And to those poor soul like me who got charged more because we are running on 3G/4G Internet connection with Monthly cap.

    I think I have finally find the cause. At least after 5 days of restarting and refreshing my system, nsurlsessiond hasn't downloaded a single thing.

     

    Td;lr - The answer is iCloud Drive, or in my case WhatsApp. Turn off iCloud Backup in WhatsApp -> Setting. And it should be fine.

     

    Long story

     

    Someone on the internet pointed out you could use Fseventer to see your HDD's file writing within the session. However the tools isn't been updated so it won't work with Yosemite or El Capitan. It turns out you could still use it by unticking low level fsevent in the fseventer preference.

     

    I watched how Caches and CloudKit was mainly responsible for all the downloading, and I notice there was a WhatsApp folder with 2GB of data, but later that folder would reset to 600MB.

     

    My theory is this, Somehow Whatever you stored in iCloud Drive, it will get cached / Sync on your computer. I have no idea why this is needed. But i see many other Apps's data on iCloud Drive downloaded on my computer.

     

    So if you have any data, like a big Movie File you constantly edit it on your Phone, and it is stored on the iCloud Drive. Then that is likely the causes.

     

    On to my case, I have been asking around for a long time and it seems no one cares to know. May be because WhatsApp is not popular in US. But WhatsApp has two way of back up, one is to use the default iCloud Backup where you back up your entire phone plus all the Apps. The other one is Whatsapp's internal backup where it store its data in the iCloud Drive.

     

    In a default scenario, most people would have BOTH turned on. Which means you are actually wasting your iCloud drive space doing double backup!. WhatsApp internal backup will constantly backup itself to iCloud drive within WiFi range, which means your computer will constantly be refreshed and redownload that backup. And in case like me I have a 2.5GB WhatsApp backup which means my Mac will be downloading the whatsapp backup, and once finished it may realise there is a newer backup so it will re download again..... and loop.

    @ksec I've also just repro'ed this in the last few days and I have isolated the issue with WhatsApp iCloud Drive backups.  I've emailed WhatsApp support (support@whatsapp.com) and raised an issue; It would help raise awareness and expedite a fix if everyone else could do the same.  And by fix, i'm hoping there is an attribute on the CloudKit API which prevents this data from being sync'ed across devices.

     

    Steps to resolve:

    • On your iPhone > Launch WhatsApp > Select the 'Settings' tab > Chats > Chat Backup > Auto Backup > Off
    • On your Mac > System Pref's > iCloud > Deselect iCloud Drive > Manage (button in the bottom-right) > Select 'WhatsApp Messenger' > Press 'Delete Documents and Data'

    Accidently I used this script with the -w string. But now my icloud doesn´t work anymore. What have I to do to undo this command? Hope there will be a solution?

    *Below is unrelated to the nsurlsessiond topic. Skip to the very end if you are not interested*

     

    I did report to Whatsapp team, as a matter of fact I asked about the iCloud backup last year and didnt get any feedback. I was hoping they could clarify if there are any DOUBLE backup if both iCloud Backup ( iPhone Backup ) and iCloud Drive Backup ( Whatsapp Back up into iCloud Drive ) were turn on, they couldn't care less.

     

    And I found out myself it does, and if you have 3GB Whatsapp history it will take up 6GB of your iCloud space.

     

    There are lots of advantage of doing Whatsapp backup via iCloud Drive rather then using iPhone default iCloud Backup.

    For iPhone iCloud Backup, iOS will compress every App's setting and Data into a number of files, and then tries to upload this to iCloud. This means if you have 5GB of Apps Data, it will likely take 3 - 4GB space to create these files. On a 16GB iPhone, you will always run out of space and therefore you will never be able to backup your iPhone even if you have like 20GB iCloud Storage space.

     

    Compared this to Whatsapp's iCloud Drive backup, i believe Whatsapp backup itself to iCloud drive in an incremental way. Which means once you have the first 3GB backup, it will only backup the small changes between your last backup. On a 16GB iPhone, you will no longer need 3 - 4GB of free space just to backup your iPhone. You need to be sure though to turn off the 4G data usage for ALL iCloud Drive Access. iOS doen't allow you to select which App to use 4G for iCloud Drive. If you have it turned on, Whatsapp will cleverly backup itself using 4G data, it is not a lot, expect another extra 10MB - 20MB per day depending on your usage. But if you are tight on your Mobile Data you will need to make sure it is switched off.

     

    This is the same as all other instant messenger, be it Facebook Chat, Kakotalk, Line, WeChat, etc. as long as they use iCloud.

     

    *Back to nsurlsessiond discussion.


    After digging a little deeper it turns out that is the default way of how iCloud Drive works. You will always be automatically sync with all the data between your OSX or iOS devices. The idea is that, like the iMovie example, if you edited a film you shoot on your iPhone, and then decide to store it on your iCloud Drive, you MAY want to edit that later on your Mac, so iCloud will sync those to your Mac. So while your osx nsurlsessiond are downloading your few GB of 4K edited video files, you have edited your Movie file AGAIN on your iPhone. Once osx finish downloading the previous copy, it will discover a new version is found on iCloud Drive and start downloading the movie file AGAIN from the start.

    It's an outgoing feed of data over the Net (7 servers receiving those data )

    Tried some methods without success. I don't want to use LittleSnitch to block anything

     

    But no Apple Advisors seems to know the point

    ...and no doubt it's true but turning off iCloud didn't stop the phantom feed for me, because so many other services use nsurlsessiond functionality. I experimented with Little Snitch and so much was trying to use it I finally just blocked it completely, wondering what I'd break. In my case, with iCloud turned off, the obvious thing that broke was Software Update, which was using that channel to download whatever app announced it had an update to send me. So a lot of that data was being cached for quick update. Turning off nsurlsessiond produced a message in the iTunes window, Software Update pane, that it can't connect to iTunes. This means that you would not get update notices, but at first blush it seems to have stopped the phantom feed for me.

     

    I agree with everyone here, this is not what I want from Apple. In my case, I choose to use a relatively slow DSL feed to shave some monthly business costs and this constant drain of bandwith would have made life worse for me.

     

    (PS, the notion that Apple advisors don't know this is happening is difficult for me to believe. Are they worried about class-action suits?)

    An update to the above. I since updated to 10.10.5 (was running 10.10.3 I believe). In Spotlight I've kept Suggestions and Bing Web Searches turned off, per advice here. Along with the System, most other updates are current, with a few pending such as Numbers. I have turned iCloud back on, but turned off everything except iCloud Drive itself in iCloud System Preferences (I've left all the apps checked in Options...).

     

    I had left Little Snitch in Trial mode, and had only denied connections "Until Restart". I find that Network activity is now entirely acceptable, nsurlsessiond comes alive momentarily but is not churning constant MBs of data. I'm not denying any connections except a persistent Logitech upgrade push that is useless on my older iMac. I can't really account for how things normalized, except possibly that the system update resolved some buggy behavior. If so, it means Yosemite wasn't really done until El Capitan was nearly released. Which further suggests that Apple had real problems enabling the full suite of Safari, iCloud and AppStore (Update) online background behaviors across the whole ecosystem.

    My problem is... If I pause the photos upload for a day it appears to have to start over again.  I've got 64GB of pics and a pretty slow upload speed.  After 5 days of constant running it's at 33.6GB... Prior to this I had paused the upload once and had to reboot the machine a couple of times... Each time it seemed that the upload was completely reset.  At about 94KB/s upload... I can't do anything online with any other devices.  But it seems to throttle back when I'm using the internet on the machine (08 Mac Pro, 10.10.5) that's doing the uploading. Doesn't help with the portables though. Does anyone know if pausing in Photos prefs really loses the previous stuff?  I'm willing to tough it out until the whole photo library goes up... But I'm catching lots of static because no one else can get any use out of our internet.

    I also dropped an email to the WhatsApp technical support, so let's see if they can fix this issue with Apple.

     

    BTW I'm using OSX El Capitan 10.11.2 fresh installed from scratch in my Macbook Air..
