Q: ios 9.0.1 crashes frequently

I have an iPhone 6, and since I installed iOS 9.0.1, I've been having a lot of trouble with apps crashing.

The behavior it exhibits:

  • It's fine for a while, then it gets into a crashing "mood".
  • Once it's in that mood, apps frequently shut down dumping me back to the home screen. Sometimes the phone will be black and unresponsive for a couple of seconds. Sometimes the phone is black for longer, then shows the apple screen, then gets me back to the home screen. I experience this both with built-in apps (Podcast, Safari) and third-party apps.
  • The keyboard tends to be very sluggish while this is going on--I can type but the letters don't show up and the keyboard doesn't respond, then the letters all show up in a rush... or else the app crashes. When the keyboard is sluggish it's a good sign the app is about to crash.

Shutting down the app (by going to the app picker and swiping it up with my thumb) doesn't resolve the issue--once this behavior starts, it keeps happening, with lots of apps. However, fully shutting down the phone and restarting it does fix the problem... for a while, until it comes back.

I did a full wipe of my phone to factory settings, then restored from a backup--it didn't solve the problem. I could try doing a full factory restore and not restoring from a backup--instead, just adding in all my apps and settings by hand--but I'd rather not do that just on "spec", I'd feel stupid doing all that and having the same problem all over again.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions on what I should try? The phone was fine before I installed 9.0.1. I haven't had similar problems with my iPad Air, which also has 9.0.1 installed.

Just wondering if anyone has found any relief. I suffer from the OPs issue. Apps crash left and right no matter which one it is. Also the keyboard lags heavily so you type and nothing happens then a few seconds later everything you typed blasts across all at once. Nothing will fix this except a full power off and power on. I was hoping 9.2 would fix it and it doesn't. I have wiped and restored twice and I even had my phone replaced by a genius. I restored from my backup and it was heaven for about 3 days.  Then the first crash came and it went downhill from there. One App I find that does it the worst is the camera App, but Safari and Mail are not far behind. I'm thinking it has something to do with connecting to the Internet. It still happens on wi-fi or data but when it crashes on wi-fi as soon as the home screen appears you can see the wi-fi signal indicator is only showing the very bottom filled in even though before the crash the signal is full. Also just after the crash it actually has the words wi-fi next to the indicator which I found odd.  The other thing I notice is that the phone gets extremely hot on the back side opposite the camera so over on the power button half of the phone.

I have taken a look at logs from X-Code and watched live logging of the phone. To be honest I don't know much about it but I figured I'd just see if I could see something obvious. No luck on that but I will say when experienclong the crashing issues the phone is constantly throwing up things in the live log even when it's just "resting" on the home screen whereas I've plugged in another iPhone and when at rest on the homescreen it is not showing much at all during live logging. So there is definitely something weird going on. I really do not want wipe my phone and start from scratch because I do have a few apps that will lose all of their data if not restored from a backup. Please help!!!

I suffered from this issue and thought for the longest time that it was the iOS9 upgrade since that's where I first experienced the problem. I've upgraded through 9.1 with the same issues ("crash moods") described in this post and have been hesitant to upgrade to anything newer since it never seemed to resolve the issue. I believe that I found the source of my issue and hopefully this will help someone out there.

In my case, the issue was caused by a rogue meeting invite for my work exchange-backed email account. Exchange (through a bug) allowed the meeting to be replicated an unlimited number of times and it killed my calendar on my desktop calendar and my phone. i resolved that issue by deleting my work email account and its local settings from my laptop and phone and for now my phone seems responsive rather than its usual "crash every 5 minutes" Mood that it used to get in on Fridays. I've been running after this for more than a week with no issues and previously every Friday the phone would crash constantly. Maybe similar situations are plaguing others and something similar can help them to resolve the issue.

I haven't upgraded to the latest iOS version yet (9.2.1 as of this writing), but since I am not seeing the crash moods anymore, I will probably upgrade in the next week. Will post back here if the issue reappears after the upgrade.
