Q: How to restrict iOS update auto-downloading to stop wasting money?

I understand you do not want your iPad to do automatic updates as you connect with your iPhone's Wi-Fi hotspot.
You can enable or disable auto-downloads in the iTunes & App Stores settings.
Turn on Automatic Downloads - Apple Support
On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
- Tap Settings > iTunes & App Store.
- If you're not already, sign in with your Apple ID.
- Turn on the content that you want to automatically download.

Dec 16, 2015 2:05 PMby ShagCA,As far as I know Nubz N. reply will only stop auto download of everything else except iOS. It will not stop iOS auto download while your iPad is charging and connected to the internet through WiFi (including WiFi connection to personal hotspot on smartphones). To disable iOS auto download, you will have to do one thing or the other:
- Connected to personal hotspot but not charging the iPad
- Charging the iPad but turn off WiFi
There's a 3rd way, stuff your iPad with data (music, photos, videos etc) until the remaining free space is down to only a few MB. Silly solution but it'll definitely stop iOS auto download because of insufficient free space.

2) Use an mdm. Using an mdm allows you to control when ios is updated.
3) Leaves less storage space than is required by the ios download. Download some large vids. Delete a vid when you need more space. size around 100meg. Garage Band is 500meg. Microsoft free office apps are rather large too.
