Q: My iPod does not connect to my Macbook iTunes and has an error message

Every time I connect my iPod to my Macbook I receive this message

"iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch “name” because an invalid response was received from the device."

I'm running OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5 and iTunes 12.3.2.35

My iPod Touch is 1st Generation 8GB A1213

I have tried everything from reseting the iPod which cleared all the music to changing the USB cord. I have researched forums and I have not been able to find the answer. Your help is highly appreciated.

iPod touch, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), iTunes 12.3

    Check your USB connections

    Errors: 13, 14, 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1611, 1643-1650, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 4005, 4013, 4014. You might also see a message that includes "invalid response."

If the USB connection between your device and computer is interrupted, you might not be able to update or restore.

To narrow down the issue, try different equipment:

If you still see the error message, check for hardware issues.

I have this problem too, 2nd gen with newest OSX and iTunes, the same USB cables tried (4) work with an old iPhone 4 on an Airbook and on Win8.1. I've tried numerous hardware resets, it can't be restored because it can't be connected, the article supplied did not help. It seems to be the newest iTunes with older hardware. Every combination I've tried gives "iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch “name” because an invalid response was received from the device."

    CONFIRMED.

I installed v.11.0.1.12 on a virtual machine and bang, it saw my Gen 2 ipod immediately. Of course because I had reset it (numerous times) it treated it as a new device and I had to configure it. Everything works fine as far as I can tell. Plug it back into my PC and the 12.3.2.35 version of iTunes gives the same "iTunes could not connect to the iPod touch “name” because an invalid response was received from the device." error as before. Reconnect to the v11 VM and it is seen immediately.

It would seem they've removed support for older generation ipods from newer versions of iTunes.
