Q: Does iPhotos still exist?

I have recently purchased a new Macbook Pro.  I haven't as yet downloaded photos from another device, and when I try to update iPhotos it tells me it has been cancelled or I don't own it.  I haven't done anything with iPhotos since buying it, so when I find it via Finder it has a cross through it, and I cannot find it in the app store (it tells me this version is not available in Australia).  Is a new one coming, or is it not available anymore?  I couldn't find an icon for it on this support page either.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), I have no idea about technology.

Apple is no longer developing iPhoto. You will find it's replacement in the Apps folder. It is called Photos, just like its counterpart on iOS devices.

Photos is the new Apple included Photo application - it will migrate old iPhoto libraries so you can use them

iPhoto is not available unless you own it and you need version 9.6.1for OS X 10.10 and above - Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

Sooner or later it will quit working with some future OS upgrade

iPhoto 9.6.1 is working well with MacOS X 10.10.3 or later. It is probably the last compatibility update Apple will ever release for iPhoto. New Macs come with the Photos for Mac application instead of iPhoto. As Dah•need and LarryHN explained, iPhoto is no longer developed and may stop working on future versions of MacOS X. So be prepared to migrate your iPhoto libraries to the new Photos for Mac or any application you prefer. But try to get iPhoto 9.6.1 to work, anyway. Not all content from your iPhoto Library will migrate unchanged to Photos, see this Help page: How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

You should be able to update to iPhoto 9.6.1, if you own an App Store version of iPhoto.  If your AppleID is associated with iPhoto at the AppStore you can update by reinstalling iPhoto, as explained in the link that LarryHN posted:

Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store

Check, if iPhoto is showing in your Purchases history - on the fourth tab "Purchases" of the App Store. If you see it there, delete the incompatible iPhoto version from the Applications folder and reload the Purchases Tab of the App Store. You should now "Install" to the right of iPhoto. If you don't see "Install" but "Update" restart the App Store.

    Hello,

Thank you for the information.  As I have a new mac book, I was a little worried one of my children had deleted something by accident.  It all makes sense and yes, I have photos.

    All good.

    Thanks again.

    Hello Larry,

Thanks heaps for the info.  You have confirmed my suspicions.  I only just updated from my ancient macbook, and when the iPhotos app had a line through it I thought maybe one of my children had deleted something by accident.  I do indeed have photos, so all is good.

    Thanks again for your reply.
